Broken Promises – Chapter 14

Chapter 14

The room was deathly silent. No one was breathing, there was no rustle of clothing or metal. It was as if the universe and everything in it held its breath for the explosion that was to come, because there would be an explosion. One of epic proportion.

Kara lay in Aden’s arms for the first time in a long time feeling complete. Oh, her body was still bruised and bleeding, but her soul was able to take a deep breath and not feel as if a vice were squeezing it, making it hard to expand. That too she knew would be short-lived. Even though she knew who she was, what she was. That she was powerful, a goddess. That she had lived more lives than she cared to count, fought even more battles. And the last and most unsettling piece of knowledge, that her life was not her own. In truth it never had been. None of them had been truly free, just that the chains that had bound them to their fate from the moment they had been brought into existence were much more subtle than the ones the demon bound her with now. They were a tool of the universe. Her job was to keep the balance between darkness and light. The last she remembered, darkness had gained a new player, and it was winning. Knowing what she knew of the past mixed with what she knew of the present, things had not changed much in the last two thousand years.

Movement next to her, an arm pulling her gently against a body she knew better than her own, and she remembered what she had just done. She had defied the demon who had locked her once mortal body in chains so thick, so strong, not even the most powerful of them could free her. Knowing she would pay for her insolence, she could not find it in her to regret her decision. Not because it was the only decision, but because the male that held her so gently, that breathed her name in her ear as if it was a prayer, was a part of her soul she could not exist without. Another such soul tugged at hers, willing her to acknowledge what had always been, what was true. Kara slowly opened her eyes, searching for one of the beings that had been her constant companion her entire existence. When she found his eyes, she flinched at the anger, the betrayal in his as he stared in horror at her.

All around them, people lay on the floor dazed or unconscious. Ignoring them all, his eyes only for the two lying by the dais watching him as if he were the starving tiger in the room and they were the only available food, Tanis stood and started for them, stopping when he stood towering above them as he glared down. There was a comfort, a level of trust and surety between Kara and the boy that was only earned through battles of blood and pain. Where the only person you had at your back was the one who had put their life before yours time and time again to assure that you both lived to see another day. The intensity of jealousy that consumed him was foreign and unyielding, covering everything in a red haze.

Clenching his fists, Tanis was unsure what he should do. Part of him wanted to rip Kara from the boy’s arms, and then teach him that he was nothing compared to the power Tanis wielded. That he was not worthy to touch Kara. The other part, the one being smothered by this new jealousy knew Kara still love him, still need him, and as the depth of her love for him brushed against his heart, his soul, it told him nothing had changed between them. She was still his. Her feelings for him were older, more comfortable, but just as passionate as her feelings for the male holding her

“We don’t understand this anymore than you do,” Aden assured carefully in the tense silence. Part of Kara’s soul once again belonged to him; all of him once again belonged to her. It was more than Aden had ever hoped for since he learned of the prophecy, and he would do nothing that would take her from him again. Adding flame to the fire that was Tanis’s jealousy would not be productive to that end. “What I do know is I am not here to take Kara from you.”

“You are not a part of this,” Tanis said, his voice strained with his anger and the effort to stay where he was.

“I think that despite your best efforts I am once again bonded to her proves otherwise,” Aden responded. He had tried to keep his voice neutral, but he was tired of being told he had no business claiming Kara as his. The only thing that stopped him from saying anything else was Kara gently his arm. A subtle warning that this was not the time. That there was a bigger threat in the room than a jealous god. A vengeful demon.

“You were warned,” a voice growled, echoing throughout the room.

With a look that told Aden they were not through, Tanis moved to stand in-between Kara and enraged demon.

Sighing, Aden burying his face in Kara’s hair. Is a moment of peace too much to ask for?” he asked letting his exhaustion fill that thought.

Unfortunately, yes, Kara answered just as weary. She shifted slightly in Aden’s arms and too late realized her mistake. The bond between them was healed to a point. The one between her and Tanis was waiting for that last piece of the ritual that would seal it. Make it as unbreakable as hers and Aden’s once was. It was her body that was still bruised, battered and bleeding that shot pain sharp and immediate through her, forcing a gasp from her lips.

“Kara?” Aden asked worriedly, moving so she lay on her back and he lay next to her, his upper body raised so he could look her over to see where the pain was coming from.

“I’m fine.” She tried to smile to assure him, but it ended in a grimace.

“Liar,” he frowned, but there was no more time to think about injuries. Hot scalding rage washed over them, burning where it touched. Kara cried out, her back arching. Aden gritted his teeth, his head bowed, eyes closed as he tried to ride out the pain. Nothing ever good came from this much rage and the one who wielded it.

“You’ve lost, demon. You cannot bond with her now,” Tanis hissed, unable to completely hide his own pain. What the hell? What kind of demon could make his emotions a weapon? The only answer was a powerful one. Tanis was starting to wonder if he had completely underestimated the creature.

The demon chuckled. It was kind of chuckle that raised the hair on the back of your neck. That spoke of a slow painful death. Low and full of evil, it sent shivers down the spines of those in the room still conscious. “You understand nothing. I haven’t lost her, yet.” His eyes moved to Aden who hovered protectively over Kara, trying to shield her with his body. As if that would save her. “Once again, because you could not let her go, she will pay the price.”

“Aden did not disobey you. I was the one who could not let him go,” Kara corrected softly. Turning her head, she looked directly into his eyes and said in a tone that spoke of a defiance that she thought long lost. “I was I who chose him.”

The silence dragged on as the demon held her gaze. The rage was gone, but Kara could not decipher the emotion in his eyes or the expression on his face. A mixture of pain, anger and longing she did not understand. Finally, it settled into an unfeeling blankness that frighten her far more than his rage.

The three watched him warily, Tanis keeping himself in between the demon while Aden and Kara lay on the floor. Careful with each movement, Aden moved so he sat next to Kara, pulling her into his arms.  They knew the risk they were taking by doing this, that they would be punished, but Aden could feel that she was too weak to sit on her own and he could not bear letting her go. Not yet. Even though their bond was back in place, it was still raw and bleeding, and Aden could feel there was something missing. Some new piece of the puzzle that had yet been put into place.

As Kara settled in his arms, her fingers fisting the front of his shirt, he realized that she felt it too. Was there was still a chance she could be taken from him? Looking down at her, he saw the pinch of her face and realized that she was still in a great deal of pain. If they were to survive whatever was to come, she needed to be stronger. Brushing the hair from her face, he gently lay a kiss on her forehead. With that small touch, he released some of his power into her, seeking where she was hurt most and carefully mending it. With each touch, Kara’s body relaxed a little more, and that piece of her that was inside him loosened a bit more.

A swish of material far too close startled Aden out of his concentration, bringing his eyes up. The emperor had walked past them, and he had not even noticed. That was a form of carelessness that was too dangerous for words. Glancing at Tanis, Aden saw he had moved so he could watch the emperor and them at the same time. The expression on his face when he caught Aden’s eyes bled from wary to outright hostile. Great. Once more being trying to take Kara from him. Unfortunately, this one he could not fight because he was also a part of Kara and that in turn would hurt her.

What was left of the red guard surrounded them, standing at attention, awaiting their master’s orders. It broke the tension between Aden and Tanis so they focused on the real threat in the room. The emperor.

The emperor had reached the top of the dais. Turning, he sat on his throne, leaning back, one arm carelessly on the arm of the chair while the other he rested his elbow, his finger rubbing back and forth on his lip as if he was thinking about something of grave importance as he watched the three below him.

The silence stretched on.

Finally, the emperor sighed. A weariness passed over his face as he closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them, they focused on Kara, ignoring the rest.

“Kara, come,” he ordered quietly.

Aden felt Kara’s hands convulse in his shirt. Neither of them wanted to let go, but they knew if they did not the consequences would be painful. What Kara did not need right now was more pain.

“She is not some pet you call to you,” Tanis snapped, his full attention and hostility now on the demon.

“Actually, she is,” the demon answered calmly, a small smile on his lips.

Tanis looked down at the two on the floor as Aden very carefully moved out from under Kara and stood. There was an unsteadiness to the boy’s stance that he tried to hide and failed. It was something Tanis understood all to well. Until the ritual was finished, none of them would feel…steady. What Aden did not know was that hell would freeze over before Tanis allowed him that privilege.

As one, they both reached to help Kara to her feet.

“Do not touch her,” the demon snarled, that calm façade slipping for a moment, showing the true beast beneath it. Just as quickly it was smoothly put back into place.

They both froze. After a moment of hesitation, Aden slowly straightened and stepped back, his eyes dutifully forward. That small distance cost him dearly. Tanis ignored the warning and gently took ahold of Kara’s arm.

“Let her go,” Aden said, his voice tired, defeated.

“You have not earned the right to tell me what I can and cannot do with my mate,” Tanis growled pulling Kara up and into his arms.

Aden’s eyes flashed with his power as they narrowed on Tanis. Logically he knew that Tanis did not know the rules, who the master was and the consequences of disobeying him. But the fierce protectiveness that raged through Aden was not logical. If Tanis did not let go of Kara, then she would pay the price, again. That was not acceptable.

“I have been with her in this lifetime through more pain and torture than you and your many lives could ever imagine. I know the rules and what it means if we disobey them. You do not. So I will repeat myself only once. Let. Her. Go,” Aden said that last through gritted teeth, his fist clenching at his sides.

He’s right, Kara’s voice breathed through Tanis’s mind. I must go to Caius or he will punish us.

That thing is not Caius, and he has no right to you. We defeated him in the paste. We can defeat him now. Tanis said angrily not understanding why she would give in so quickly. It was so unlike her.

You are right. He has no right to either of us, but this time is different. This time he found me first and he bound me in chains that we cannot break, Kara reminded reading his thoughts. If you attack him it will rebound on me. If you kill him…it will kill me.

Tanis’s eyes widen as he turned to face her. “He can’t do that,” he whispered looking into her eyes.

“But he has,” Aden answered when Kara look away, his voice filled with the weariness of countless of sleepless night. Ignoring Tanis’s narrowing eyes when he glared at him, Aden went on. “You have felt her pain. You know what he did to her just this morning. What he will do to her again if she does not obey him. Is that what you want for her?”

“Kara,” the demon called, his voice a low deep growl telling them he was growing impatient.

Knowing what hesitating any longer would cost, Kara pulled away from Tanis and began to walk towards the dais. Before she was out of reach, Tanis grabbed her arm pulling her back. Kara tried to pull away, but he only held on tighter.

“You don’t have to obey him,” he said looking down at her, frowning when he saw the frighten look in her eyes.

“Yes, she does,” Aden corrected again stepping beside him.

“Don’t,” Tanis snarled when Aden reached to pull her from him.

Aden’s eyes narrowed in anger. “Do you want her to suffer?” he hissed.

Before Tanis could retort Kara cried out in pain and seconds later it bled into him. Years of protecting her, shielding her kicked in and he immediately tried to block the demon’s attack only to find he could not. Gritting his teeth, he pushed back as the demon increased the pain.

Aden watched in horror as Tanis tried to fight the inevitable. He knew from experience the pain would only become worse, and he would not sit by and watch Kara suffer because Tanis was too stubborn to see their reality.

Swearing, he grabbed Kara wrenching her from Tanis’s grasp. Suddenly the full force of the demon’s attack hit both Aden and Kara. Crying out they collapsed to the floor. The moment Aden released her the pain stopped.

“Shit,” he hissed rolling onto his back trying to blink the spots from his eyes. Next to him Kara lay on her side barely conscious.

“Kara!” Tanis cried going to help her.

“Stop!” Aden’s ordered his voice echoing throughout the room as he rolled protectively over her, his hand up ready to push Tanis away if necessary. Although he was not sure what he could do. The demon’s punishment had taken the last of his strength. Under him, Aden felt Kara move slightly before her fingers weakly grab a hold of the wrist closest to her. Once their skin touched his power increased and the spots began to diminish. Moving his hand so he held hers, Aden quickly masked what Kara was doing from the emperor, but he could not hide it from Tanis.

Tanis hesitated, his eyes widening slightly when he felt what she had done with Aden. Sharing power between their kind was an intimate act seldom done, but more common between bond mates. This more than anything brought home how close Kara was wedded to Aden, and Tanis was unsure how to handle the knowledge. Always it had just been the three of them. Now this boy was protecting his mate from…him, and Kara was helping.

A low chuckle broke into the silence. Aden slowly lowered his hand, his eyes staying on Tanis and not the figure who now slowly walked towards them. Again, Tanis thought this strange because the demon was the danger to Kara, not him. Deciding to puzzle this new development out later, Tanis turned towards the demon, his eyes narrowing in rage.

“Not bonded more than a few moments and already you are fighting over her. You should heed Lord Sahen’s warning. He has learned the hard way what it means to try and protect her from me.”

Tanis watched Aden climb once again shakily to his feet, leaving Kara where she lay on the floor. He thought it strange that the powerful boy would not meet either of their gazes.

“Lord Sahen,” the demon said as if nothing had happened. As if the universe had not just shifted.

“Yes, my Master,” Aden answered bowing his head.

“Take our…guest,” he grimaced when he glanced at Tanis who bristled, “to his quarters. Then I want you to go down and pay a visit to the queen.”

“I thought she served her purpose,” Aden said confused by his master’s command.

“She delivered the package, yes, but not as promised. Colin did a better job breaking my beautiful pet. Since neither one of us want Colin anywhere near Kara, it leaves me with no choice but to break Tanis myself.”

At Colin’s name, Tanis stiffened. Colin was the queen’s consort who was known for his sadistic appetites. The thought of Kara in Colin’s hands for any length of time made his blood run cold.

“I want you to personally show her the correct way to break a spirit. Then when you are done, I want you to hand her over to her people. Tell them who she really is and let them deal with her as they see fit. After that I want you to find someone to take her place who will not fail us,” the emperor finished.

“That will take weeks,” Aden protested not catching the panic laced with bitterness in his voice or stopping himself from glancing at Kara in time. After everything that had happened, to be parted from her now…. The thought chilled him.

“Yes. It will,” the emperor agreed his eyes narrowing.

A faint flutter brushed against Aden’s mind, soothing his anxiety.

Aden, Kara breathed. Go.

The relief Aden felt at her familiar presence washing through his body calmed him. She was still there, still his, but she was also very weak. Any more zaps like the last one and she may not survive it whole. He would have to make sure Tanis understood rules before he left.

“As you wish,” Aden answered calmly, coolly, even though every cell in his body was screaming no. Kara’s assurances did nothing to alleviate his fears. From past experience Aden knew that leaving her alone with his master would be far from all right. But as Caius had so plainly put it, disobeying him would only cost Kara more pain. “I will return when the job is done.” He first bowed to the emperor then turned to the guards, motioning them to take Tanis and follow him.

“I am not leaving her alone with you, demon,” Tanis growled stepping away from the guards. He too knew leaving Kara alone with this…thing was dangerous, something he would not allow.

Gritting his teeth in frustration as the two demi-gods glared at each other, without thought of the consequences he was sure he would regret, Aden’s fist connected with Tanis’s jaw. There were a few gasps as flesh connected with flesh and Tanis crumpled to the ground. Aden knew he would hear about it once they arrived in Tanis’s rooms, but he would be damned if he let the stubborn idiot cause Kara anymore pain.

Stunned silence followed sd Aden, swearing under his breath, stepped back shaking his hand as pain radiated up his arm. All around him people stood frozen, the only movement the blinking of their wide eyes.

“I think I speak for us all when I say I did not see that coming,” Commander Wells drawled as he walked up to the crumpled figure on the floor. His eyes full of amusement, he looked from Tanis to Aden. “Although I wished you had done it sooner,” he grimaced. When Aden gave him a slight smile it seemed to unfreeze the room.

The emperor began to chuckle, bringing Aden’s eyes to his master.

“Be careful who you direct your anger at, my young one,” the emperor warned the amusement still clear in his voice. “And do not think you will be able to render my brother unconscious so easily again. He will take measures to ensure you regret it when he wakes.”

“He’s a stubborn fool,” Aden snapped turning his glare back to the figure on the floor who started to groan.

“Stubborn yes. Fool? No. He is just very protective of her,” the emperor said softly as he knelt next to Kara.

The soft tone of his master’s voice, the way he gently rolled Kara over brushing the hair from her face, changed Aden’s scowl into a frown of confusion. If he did not know better he would have thought someone different, someone who cared for her wellbeing, knelt over her. But that did not make any sense. Not after the way he had treated her these last few weeks.

“It is ingrained in us to protect her. She is the glue that keeps the universe together. If she is destroyed…,” the emperor whispered so softly Aden had to strain to hear him. Then suddenly his master seemed to remember he was not alone. “All of you, leave us. Kara will follow when I am through with her,” he ordered harshly.

Aden motioned for the guards to take Tanis out of the room, but he hesitated before leaving. Watching as the emperor put his hands on Kara, Aden wondered at his master’s sudden softening towards her. Taking the fact the agonizing ripping of his soul did not start again as a good sign, Aden did the hardest thing he had had to do in a long time, He left Kara alone with the unstable emperor before their master realized he was still there.

Broken Promises – Chapter 13

Chapter 13

Kara lay gasping for air, Tanis’s heavy body lying on hers making it harder to breath. Groaning, Tanis lifted himself far enough so he could look into her eyes, his shinning with his triumph. When he saw the look of horror on her face, that triumph wilted.

“Kara?” he whispered not understanding her reaction. They were together again. She should have been happy.

“What have you done?” she breathed.

He frowned down at her. This was not what he was expecting. Always their reunion was a happy one, a joyous occasion as they relearned each other’s bodies, souls. Then he felt it. Although their memories had been restored and the players were once again immersed in the elaborate game of chess they had been playing for thousands of lifetimes, something was different. Because this time Tanis was the one who started the ritual that bound their souls, he encompassed a majority of Kara’s soul. While Caius was still there, his presence had been pushed to the background, so he was there but not forgotten. Although this time there was a difference. Someone else, a stranger, held a larger piece firmly in his grasp. Someone powerful who was in this room. Tanis had a moment of disbelief followed by a stab of jealousy that stoked his fading anger. That was before his eyes saw what lay around Kara’s neck. Then the focus of that anger switch and boiled into a rage that blotted out all other concerns. His eyes filled with blue flame and locked on the necklace.

“I will kill him,” Tanis snarled. Before Kara could caution him, Tanis’s eyes shot to where Caius sat. “You dare!” he hissed.

“Be careful of your tone, Tanis. The rules have changed, and you don’t know the dangerous line you precariously walk on,” Caius warned his eyes narrowing.

“Take this piece of filth off her!” Tanis demanded, ignoring both Caius’s warning, and Kara’s pleading eyes.

“No,” Caius replied calmly.

The silence that followed was heavy with unfiltered hatred. The onlookers who were still conscious stared in amazement at the unknown male as he glared at their emperor as if he was an equal.

“Then I will,” Tanis snarled in the silence.

Before Tanis could touch the necklace he found himself flying across the room. Slamming into the floor and sliding across the polish metal, lifetimes of training kicked. Rolling until he stopped himself, one knee was down while his hands held his torso up, ready to attack, a snarl on his lips, he readied himself for attack. “You bastard! How could you defile her with that abomination?”

“There are more ways to defile than a cursed necklace,” Caius sneered, the innuendo of what he was referring to thick in his voice.

The memories of what he had force on Kara only hours ago once again filled Tanis’s mind and he saw red. Snarling he stood. The only thing that stopped him was Kara’s desperate voice yelling in his head, “No!”

Before Kara could scramble to her feet to physically stop Tanis from making a huge mistake, Caius spoke.

“Kara,” he ordered calmly.

Weeks of pain and torture, along with the knowledge of what the necklace would do to her if she disobeyed, froze Kara on her hands and knees.

“Very good,” Caius cooed as he once more stood. “Very good. You will do well to remember your place. It may be less…painful for you both.”

“I said, take it off her,” Tanis demanded striding towards Caius.

Guards moved to stop Tanis, but with a wave of his hand they flew backwards away from him.

Kara screams filled the room as she collapsed, writhing in pain on the floor.

Tanis froze, staring at her in horror. “What have you done?” Tanis whispered his eyes returning to Caius. Tanis was far too old not to know exactly what the necklace was and what it meant that Kara wore it. The necklace rendered the wearer unable to disobey its master. It did not harm the wearer if someone else caused harmed to others.

“I tweaked it a little,” Caius shrugged. “You harm any of my guards, or me, Kara feels our pain tenfold. Her soul may be yours, but the rest of her is mine.”

As Tanis watched the gleeful abandonment fill the face of the male that stood before him while he watched Kara writhe in pain, he realized that this was not his brother. Caius would never have caused Kara this amount of suffering. Not even when he was the enemy and Tanis was her choice. No, what stood before him not his brother, but the demon they had fought two thousand years ago. The one who had enslaved his brother’s soul. The cost was their lives, but the demon had been defeated, or so they thought.

“How?” Tanis breathed.

The smile the demon awarded Tanis spoke of a madness deep seeded within its evil soul. “Easy.” he answered in a tone that left Tanis cold. “We never died.”

Tanis eyes grew wide. If they never left the physical plane, then the demon had had two thousand years to plot and plan, to lay his traps and wait for them to resurface. Tanis looked at Kara as she stared back at him, her face struggling for neutral and failing. They both knew what this meant. For the first time in the history of the universe, another entity, one that was not of this dimension and made of pure evil, was in control.

The outcome of the universe was no longer in their hands.

An unpleasant thought crossed Tanis’s mind. If the demon inhabited Caius’s body, then, “Where is my brother? Where is Caius?”

“Gone. He used the last of himself in a useless bid to give you time to start the ritual.” There was no inflection, no emotion what-so-ever in his expression. It was just fact. The parasite had taken the body and the host was gone.

Tanis staggered sideways a couple of steps, his lungs having trouble drawing air, his heart stuttering. Gone? But that was impossible. If Caius was gone, then why were he and Kara still here? The demon had to be lying. It was the only explanation.

Clinging on to that one thought, that one hope, he stared at the demon who stood staring at Kara with a look of hunger and longing.

“They would not have allowed this,” Tanis breathed.

“They are too arrogant in their power to see me,” the demon sneered.

“Now that we are awake they will know what you have done. They will destroy you.”

“They have already tried…and they failed,” the demon shrugged. “Do you think this is the first time we have been here, at this exact moment. Oh, the place is different, the shells that hold our souls different, but the circumstances, the juxtaposition have all been the same.” He turned to face Tanis, the madness in his soul turning his eyes red. “There is not a word that describes how long I have lived. How many times we have faced each other, fought each other, lost. No more!”

Without warning bolts of energy shot out of Caius’s hands encircling Tanis. He screamed in agony as they hit him sending fire into his spine spreading outwards, dropping him to his knees. Every nerve ending was on fire, every muscle contracted, threatening to tear. His lungs froze leaving him unable to scream, and there was nothing Tanis could do to stop it. From across the room, far from the fight, Kara screamed in agony, yet nothing touched her. After a few moments, the lightening disappeared, and the pain stopped as suddenly as it had begun, leaving Tanis on the floor gasping for air as bright spots danced across his eyes.

“In the end you too will fail, and you will be mine. Just as Caius was. Just as Kara is,” the demon snarled.

Tanis looked at him then followed his gaze. Kara lay on her side clutching her abdomen in obvious pain.

“Such a helpful side effect of the bond you cling so desperately to. That one feels what the other does.” The demon glanced at Aden who lay next to the throne unconscious, the tearing of Kara’s soul from his too painful even for the strong sorcerer to endure. Now to see if all his careful planning held true. He glanced down at Kara, his senses reaching out to her, gently searching her soul as if he was afraid he would hurt her. A far cry from the way he had treated her body, but then again, a soul was a fragile thing, and killing her was not what he wanted. What he found pleased him.

“Yes!” he breathed. “Her soul. Don’t you feel it? You don’t surround it, saturate it. Although she does yours. Interesting,” he mused walking towards Kara, his hand outstretched.

“Don’t touch her!” Tanis snarled as he pushed himself to his feet. Reaching out his hand he lashed out with his power, knocking the demon across the room away from Kara. Just as quickly Kara screamed in agony and pain lanced through Tanis, once again dropping him to the floor.

The demon’s evil chuckle filled the room. Tanis looked through the watering of his eyes, watching Caius slowly climb to his feet, unharmed. “You were always a slow learner.”

“Bastard,” Tanis hissed clenching his hands trying to keep himself from lashing out again. The demon had set his traps well. There was no way Tanis could fight him without hurting Kara, or worse, killing her.

“You need to find a new name for me. That one is becoming tiresome,” his voice bored.

“Then give me a name,” Tanis suggested.

The demon chuckled. “And give you power over me? I think not. Now, back to my original thought. Kara is not completely yours.”

“She has never been completely mine. My brother always held a part of her, and I believe he still does,” Tanis added carefully. The demon hesitated only for a moment, but Tanis saw it. It gave him hope that Caius was still in there, somewhere. Still, the demon was too close to Kara and too unpredictable to push. The gods only knew what would happen if he completely went mad.

“While that is true, there is a small obscure piece of the prophecy the powers that be keep hidden that tells of a time where there will be a third that will bind him or herself to the Key. It is called the Catalyst.” He glanced up at Aden who lay still as death then back to Tanis. “After the ritual that awakens the part of her that is immortal, a part of her soul remains open and vulnerable for a short period of time. Waiting for the catalyst to claim what belongs to it. If that piece is not claimed within a certain period of time, then whoever she bonds with in that life time, which is either Caius who represents evil or darkness or you who represents good or light, will fill the void.” He looked back down at Kara, his red eyes darkening with eagerness and hunger. “This is one of those times. By ripping Aden from her, you have opened her soul, her power, her destiny for me to claim. It’s time I right a wrong that was made long before this universe was created. Time I take what should have been mine,” Caius declared slowly walking towards her.

“Caius or I would have felt the difference, and Kara has never mentioned it.” Tanis had no idea what the demon was talking about, but the ten layers of hell would freeze over before he let the bastard touched her again.

“That is because it is only felt when the Key is nearby. I have not been idle these last two thousand years. It took time but I found the Key. I kept him hidden, molded him into my weapon and brought them together when the time was right so her soul would open, and I could claim it before you appeared. What I did not consider was the binding would be instantaneous and unbreakable. No ritual, not even touch. Just one look and they were one.” The smile he directed at Tanis made his pulse race as the enormity of what he had done finally sunk in. “Now, thanks to your deep seeded jealousy, you have done what should have been impossible.” He turned back to Kara. “Now she will be mine.”

“You will not have her!” Tanis vowed staggering once again to his feet. If he could not use his powers against the demon, then he would physically stop him. He just hoped his brother would forgive him after he was through. Reaching his hand out, he willed Kara’s body to come to him. Sliding across the slick metal floor as if invisible strings pulled her along, she was almost to him, his fingers brushing her skin when he found himself in the air, an invisible force squeezing his neck cutting his air off.

“You will not take what is mine,” the demon snarled stalking towards them.

“She is not yours,” Tanis choked, his fingers on his neck trying to pry the invisible force away. It was only then he realized just how powerful the demon was. Far more powerful than any of them were, maybe even more powerful then the powers that be. This was not good. How were they supposed to fight something this powerful? The thought was interrupted when the demon in question shoved his face into Tanis’s face.

“She should have been mine! She would have been mine if not for the other’s interference.”

Something in the demon’s tone made Tanis think he was not talking about Kara, but someone else. Then he sensed Kara’s soul once again seeking, looking for what had been so viciously ripped from it.

No, Kara, Tanis begged desperately, the thought of sharing her unbearable even though he knew it was the only way to save them. Please!

There is no other way, she whispered the pain and desperation in that thought forcing a shudder from Tanis. Just as she was about to reach the one she sought another soul, a malevolent soul, brushed against hers, burning her as acid would burn skin. A soul that was ancient.

No! He could not have her. He could not bond with her or all would be lost. Desperately Kara tried to pull back, but the tendrils of that soul were sticky, and the more she struggled the more of it touched her. Much like a fly caught in a spider’s web.

“NO!” she screamed aloud.

Aden lay on his side near the throne barely conscious. Power crackled around him, screams of terror filled his ears, but he could only lie on the floor struggling to draw a breath. She was gone. She was gone and his whole world collapsed in on top of him. Better to die then live with this mind numbing soul crushing loss.

Aden, Kara breathed through his mind, desperation thick in her voice.

Kara? unwilling to believe it was her.

Then the most incredible thing happened. Her soul brushed against his. Just as quickly something ripped it away. Something…evil. No! It could not have her! Not as long as he lived.

Gathering what strength he had left, Aden pushed himself up far enough so he could see what was going on. Tanis hung suspended in the air clutching at his throat. Kara lay below him with Caius leaning over her, his eyes gleaming red, his long fingers reaching down to touch her.

A voice Aden had never heard before whispered in his mind. You cannot allow him to touch her. If he does, all will be lost.

Fear stabbed Aden heart. He had to save her, but in his weakened state he knew he would be able to make it to Kara before Caius touched her. He needed time, but to attack Caius would bring pain down on Kara. Maybe if he aimed at Tanis, breaking Caius’s hold it would be enough of a surprise to give him time to pull Kara closer to him.

Shoving his hand towards Tanis, Aden unleashed what little of his power he still commanded, sending Tanis flying backwards while pulling Kara towards him. Unfortunately, he was only able to bring her halfway. He would have to go to her if he was to save them all.

Caius stumbled backwards, blinking in shock at the suddenness of the attack. Even as she moved, Kara arched her back, gasping for air that would not come. Grimacing at the knowledge he had inadvertently harmed her, Aden staggered to his feet and down the stairs to where Kara lay, collapsing onto his hands and knees next to her.

The last time it had only taken one look into her beautiful hazel eyes and he was hers. This time he could feel their souls reaching out to each other, but for some reason it was not enough.

“What do I do?” he whispered desperately.

“Kiss me,” Kara answered hoarsely.

He could do that. Smiling down at her in response to her smile, Aden leaned down. Just before his lips touched hers the demon’s voice, thick with malice filled the room.

“Touch her and the last two weeks will seem like a caress to what I will do to her!” he snarled.

Aden hesitated. He would not do anything to hurt the female in his arms. Even if it meant his death. Kara did not give him the choice. Reaching up, she tangled her fingers in his hair pulling him down to her.

“NO!” the demon roared.

The moment their lips touched power flared out with enough force it knocked everyone against the back walls. Deepening their kiss, Aden wrapped his arms around Kara, pulling her tightly against him as once again their souls wrapped around each other, tangling together becoming one. Tanis and Caius may have held her soul all these eons, but they were no longer the only ones, and with that one kiss Aden changed the course of the universe.

With that one kiss, he was home.

Broken Promises – Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Power.

Power filled the room, immense, suffocating. Power that was foreign as it was familiar. Power that staggered Tanis, engulfed him as soon as the door slid open. Gasping for air, he dropped to his hands and knees, the guards around him taking a cautious step backwards, their eyes wary as they watched. Did they not feel it? Did it not slither down their throats through their mouths, their noses, choking them?

Then the memories came again. Not smooth as a stream that lazily wound through the forest, unimpeded, but with the force of a tidal wave crashing into a rocky cliff, tearing, forcing its way into the cracks and crevices, destroying everything in its path only to be remade on the ocean floor, full of sharp jagged edges.

Tanis rose up on his knees, head thrown back, arms wide, and screamed. All that he was exploded outwards, rearranged and slammed back into him remade. Something deep within him he did not know existed, something that had been waiting for just this moment, clicked into place and suddenly he knew…everything. Who he was. All of him. The lives…so many lives…he had lived, loved, died in. The battles he had fought, the women who he loved and had borne children for him so the prophecy lived on. The power he held. Power that branded him and his siblings gods. In that one moment of clarity he knew exactly where he was in the universe. Everything about the mortals surrounding him, their strengths, their weaknesses. Who the male on the throne was to him. His brother, his nemesis. How many times they had fought together, against each other. The betrayal that was still bitter in his throat, painful in his heart. The one that cost them the very reason for their existence.

Rage, two thousand years simmering, roared through Tanis, blotting out every thought but one. Kill the demon sitting on the throne. Not even the call of his beloved would deter him from his revenge. That one thought brought a whole new barrage of memories, none of them his, all of them of the female lying on the floor clinging onto a life she no longer wanted. Memories of love, of joy, of misuse, of pain. So much pain. And as his memories awoke the part of him that was immortal, her memories awoke the part of her that understood what was happening to her, to them. A part that screamed to be released from the bonds Caius had woven within her, around her with the cursed necklace. Chains that were unbreakable even for a god.

Tanis’s rage intensified. How dare he!

Dropping back onto his hands, sucking in precious air, Tanis tried to speak and failed. A few more gasps and he managed to raise his head to glare at the figure who sat with a smile so full of triumph, of evil, that any sane male would recoil from it. Tanis was not one of those males. He was too old, to jaded, to familiar with the figure before him that all that smile did was piss him off.

“You bastard!” he snarled hoarsely.

The room gasped at the audacity of the newcomer. Did he not know who he spoke so disrespectively too?

“Hello, brother,” Caius sneered, the last word uttered as if it were something foul.

“You are no brother of mine,” Tanis sneered, pushing himself up so he sat on his heels. The room spun before settling into vision fuzzy around the edges. It was always like this when they woke to their true selves. Painfully disorienting. Something Tanis did not want to be when he knew the bastard in front of him was already very aware of who he was. “Not after what you did to her.”

Caius shrugged. “I did what I had to do to win.”

“It has never been a competition,” Tanis yelled pushing to his feet. Staggering a few steps forward as the world ran in streamers, he caught himself on a nearby post with one hand. The other he put to his head and groaned. He always hated this part. Almost as much as each time the love of his existence died in his arms.

“Hasn’t it been?” Caius asked, his anger leaking into this voice. “We awaken. We vie for her affections and she chooses. Then the battle begins. It has always been about competition. Who is the strongest, the most willing to fight for her, to die for her.”

“Which is why we are still fighting,” Tanis hissed, a sudden spurt of pain slicing through his head. Gasping, he blinked his eyes, trying to clear his vision. If he was going to survive this, he needed to have his wits about him. He looked up at Caius and was happy that the fuzzy edges had become clearer. “She loves us both.”

“Yet time and time again she chooses you because of a lie.”

“I never lied to either of you,” Tanis snapped.

“True, but you never corrected it either,” Caius countered.

“And when she chose you. Did you tell her the truth? All of it? Or did you only tell her the parts that would draw her to you?” Tanis asked taking a step towards the dais.

“Enough of this,” Caius snapped, waving a hand to dismiss the conversation. “Finish what has been started so we can finally end it.”

“I will not allow you dig your claws into her any further,” Tanis swore standing his ground. With Kara so close, so near death already, it took everything he had to stand his ground. Every cell in his body screamed to go to her, to save her.

“She is already mine,” Caius snarled, slipping forward on his throne as if he wanted to stand then thought better of it.

“If that were true, you would not be pushing me to finish it,” Tanis smiled knowingly. “You may have bound her to you through that damned necklace, but you do not truly have her soul. For that you need me.”

The smile Caius gave him made Tanis uneasy, but his own smile did not falter. He would not allow the bastard to know how hard it was to allow Kara to die. It was what she wanted. To end this existence and be free of Caius.

“She will never truly be free of me, for even if she dies, I will live on and I will find her as I found her this time. Do you really want her to suffer as she has again and again, for I will find her in every life time until the two thousand years are expended, and we once again stand before one another. Do you hate me that much, brother, to cause her that much agony?”

A movement caught the corner of Tanis’s eye. As one, he and Caius turned to the boy who had fallen to his hands and knees next to the throne, gasping as if it was hard to catch his breath. Up until that point Tanis had not even noticed him, which confused him. The power that radiated off the boy, and he used the term because he was comparing the thousand plus years with his own many millenniums, was impressive. He should have noticed him among the mortals, but he hadn’t. Thinking harder Tanis realized that he knew the boy was in the room because he had seen him walk in here before him. Just as suddenly the boy was a blank, as if he was not right there in front of them. A few flickers of life, as if whatever was shielding him was losing power, and suddenly the boy was a brilliant white light.

“Aden?” Caius asked reaching for him, concern lacing his once scathing tone.

“Why are you trying to hide him from me?” Tanis demanded stepping forward. A sudden rustle of cloth and metal froze him in his tracks. The shock of what they had witnessed had worn off and the guards were suddenly doing their job. Guarding their emperor.

“I have done nothing,” Caius answered absently, the anger evaporating under the sudden sharp concern for his apprentice. The sudden emotion had confused the demon who possessed him, for he did not understand love or compassion, and allowed Caius to escape the prison the bastard had put him in in the back of his own mind. Kneeling down next to Aden, Caius was careful not to touch him. Something was wrong, and he had little time to find out what it was before the cold-blooded demon took control again. “What is happening?”

“She’s dying,” Aden squeezed out. There was no air to show the panic that thrummed through his body. He was losing her. Not in that even though she was not his, she would still be there. He could still see her, talk to her, hold her. But in that final there is nothing left but memories and grief and pain.

“What?” Caius asked in alarm, his eyes shooting towards the figure on the floor. “No!” he breathed.

“I’m trying to help her, but she does not want to live so she is fighting me.” He prayed that the panic he felt coming off his master was real. Only the man who cared for them both would panic like this. The man who had tortured them as if their pain gave him pleasure would have revealed in their pain. He gasped out the one last bit of information that he hoped would drive Caius into action. “Our bond is taking me with her.”

The panic in the eyes that shot back to Aden was very real. Maybe there was still hope.

In the back of Caius’s head the demon roared. It would soon break free of the cage Caius had thrown it into and then there would be hell to pay. It had been only in these last few months that he had realized what a fool he had been. Now he barely had time to warn the male who now hated him and save the female that was the reason for his and the universes existence. Struggling to his feet, Caius looked at his brother, the only other person he trusted with his life, his soul, and those two things were lying on the floor dying.

“I have little time,” he said waving the guards to put their weapons up.

“What are you talking about?” Tanis snapped, although there was doubt in that tone. There was something different about Caius. Something in the eyes, in his posture.

“You must begin the ritual or he will take her,” Caius urged.

“That boy is no match for us,” Tanis sneered. “And Kara would never allow him to bond with her.”

Caius closed his eyes and counted to ten. He had forgotten how frustratingly stubborn his brother could be, and he was supposed to be the reasonable one. Opening them, he narrowed them on Tanis. “Don’t be a jealous fool. It does not become either of us,” he scolded.

Before Tanis could retort, he was suddenly airborne and flying towards the dais. When he reached Kara, Caius dropped him on the floor next to her.

“Unless you want to lose her forever, start the damn ritual. Now!” The last was meant to be forceful, but the air left him and the demon roared in his head. Doubling over, Caius fought not to lose consciousness so he could hold the demon back for as long as possible, giving his brother time to do what he had been created to do. Save them all.

Tanis stared at the hunched figure on the dais in confusion. What the hell was going on? Then he felt it. Evil so vile that it burned his skin where its power touched. A laugh that did not belong to his brother but something dark and depraved started low and eager from Caius’s mouth. Tanis did not hesitate. Looking down at the prone figure next to him, he reached for not only with his hands, but his mind, his soul, his power. The moment his skin touched hers, it felt as if the very air around them stopped moving. Carefully he turned her over, brushing the hair from her face. Wishing he had more time to learn her features in this life time, he leaned down, pressing his lips to hers. There would be plenty of time later, if they survived.

Pressure within them, around them, began to build, contracting down to a single pinprick, waiting until the moment when their souls touched before it exploded outwards with such gentleness the only outward signs that anything had happened was those in the room, across the ship shivered as the power danced over their skin.

Time stood still. There was a moment of understanding, of joy. They were together again. Two thousand years of waiting, of stuck in the endless loop of her dying in his arms and she was once again here. Alive. Then he felt it. A strange link that was not his and did not lead to Caius, but someone that did not belong. Tanis followed it down the metaphysical line to find the boy. Aden. At first Kara’s soul, the essence made of who she was, began to rise, to protect. Not in fear Tanis would harm her, but in fear of what Tanis would do to Aden. Where there was confusion on how or why the bond was forged in the first place, one thought was very clear from both Kara and Aden. They did not want it broken, and they would fight with everything they had to keep it whole.

Tanis, no, Kara’s weak voice breathed through his mind, pleading with him not to do this.

He does not belong, Tanis growled. Aden was not part of the universe’s equation. Kara belong to him and his brother, and neither of them shared her with anyone else. It was not the way the Gods intended it, and Tanis would see that it stayed that way. Gathering his will, he attacked Aden’s hold on her.

The room stood in silence as they watched the figures on the floor. Kara lay motionless as Tanis leaned over her, head bowed in concentration. Aden was on his knees, his eyes closed tightly in obvious pain, sweat beading on his face as he fought some unseen force. The emperor was now sitting on this throne, his elbows on the arms of his chair, his fingers tented as he watched the two figures on the floor before him. He could feel the power between them building, intertwining, tearing. The second burst of power that filled the room slammed all who stood in the room back against the walls, dropping them in heaps onto the floor. With a cry of agony and profound loss, Aden collapsed to the floor at the same time Kara screamed, her back arching. Tanis’s head fell back and he roared to the heavens in triumph before collapsing on top of Kara.

In that one instant, the universe shifted.

“It is done,” Caius breathed, his red eyes full of triumph.

Broken Promises – Chapter 11

Chapter 11

Kara was brought before the emperor by two of the elite Red Garrison guards. Two of the six that had survived Aden’s vengeance. The only two who had refused to touch her during her…punishment. Two of the remain four stood at attention just inside the door to the throne room, bruised and battered but functional. The remaining two were still in the infirmary, one paralyzed with a broken back, the other on life support in critical condition, one arm ripped from his body along with a vital piece of male anatomy. It was still unsure if he would survive the next few hours.

The two who held Kara between them gently lay her on the floor before the Emperor then quickly backed away. While they hadn’t been involved in the rape, they had heard the message from the young sorcerer loud and clear. Anyone who touched the emperor’s witch with intent to harm would answer to him. Where they were loyal to their emperor and feared his wrath if they did not obey his orders, at the moment Lord Sahen’s rage was far more crucial to avoid. What he had done to the other nineteen guards…. One of the remaining shuddered at the thought of the carnage, of the screams. No, they would not touch the witch unless absolutely necessary and then with great care.

As per Caius’s orders, the healer had attempted to only heal those wounds that would have left her unable to perform her duties. But with Kara fighting her every step of the way, it meant Kara was still in a great deal of pain and barely alive. Even now the healer stood to one side, ready to render aid if Kara’s heart started to fail.  The gods only knew what the emperor, or Lord Sahen, would do to her if the girl died.

“I see you have learned your place once again,” Caius cooed, bringing everyone’s attention to him.

Kara could hear the pleasure in Caius’s voice at her suffering, but she could not muster the emotion to react. Part of her wanted to yell at him, tell him that she did not lie on the cold metal floor out of obedience, but because she had no will to live. That she could feel her life force slipping away, bit by bit, and she did not fight it. Part of her, a part that was foreign, new, mourned his callousness. His glee in her pain. This was not the male she knew and loved. This was the demon who had dug his claws in deep and was not about to let go of his prize. Those thoughts puzzled Kara. Where did they come from? She knew of no demon, and she sure as hell did not love the bastard that sat on his throne sneering down at her. Feared, loathed yes, but never loved. The moment she thought that last she knew it was not true, just not why it was not true.

“You look so fetching abasing yourself to your betters, my dear. Don’t you think so Lord Sahen?”

Kara felt rather then saw Aden walk to stand next to her. Felt his alarm at the dimness of the light that was her soul. However, they both knew better than to act on that alarm. Not with the mood their master was in.

“My lord,” Aden greeted bowing, keeping his eyes downcast. He could not guarantee that his eyes were a safe neutral. Showing his rage at his master’s cruelty would do neither of them any good. He also had to be careful to keep his eyes adverted from Kara. If he saw the condition she was in, the thin control he held on his rage would break, and heaven help what stupid thing he would do. Like try and kill Caius. That did not stop Aden from feeling her slipping away from him, from them all, and she did nothing to fight it. Why didn’t the emperor feel it too? If she was so important to his plans, why didn’t he help her?

“Doesn’t she look the vision, Lord Sahen? Lying there on the floor before her master. Where she belongs!” The emperor’s voice had gone from sweet to hard, punctuating the last few words.

Then and only then did Aden dare to look at her.

Kara’s hair fanned around her head on the floor, her dress barely covering her, leaving her legs and part of her ass along with the fading welts and bruises exposed for everyone to see. He felt her fear, knowing one wrong move with the mood their master was in would mean another more excruciating round of some sort of agony. Right on the heels of that emotion was the feeling that she did not care for she would not be in this world long. NO! Aden screamed.

I am sorry, my love, Kara breathed, a single tear sliding down her cheek, hovering for a moment before falling to the cold floor.

Clenching his fists and jaw, Aden struggled to keep his place. One wrong move and the emperor may finish what he had inadvertently started. How to draw his attention to the immediate danger of Kara’s dwindling life force without directing his anger at her for daring to thwart all his careful planning.

“Yes, she does, but I wonder how much the healer has helped her,” Aden answered his eyes finding and narrowing on said healer. There, a safe target for his rage. The healer wisely paled and dropped to her knees, her forehead touching the floor.

“How do you mean?” Caius asked.

“Master,” the healer beseeched. “I tried to heal her, but she refused my help. When I forced it on her, she blocked my magic.” The trembling in her body from her terror showed in her voice. “It is as if she wants to die.”

The following silence was deafening.

“We shall see,” Caius response ominously filled the room. Then he smiled a smile that did not alleviate the tension in the room. “Lord Sahen. Come take your place at my side where you belong.”

Hesitating for only a moment, Aden reluctantly did as he master bid. Swallowing, he started for the dais, leaving Kara on the floor behind him. It went against every part of him to leave her vulnerable and exposed, but they were playing a dangerous game of cat and mouse, and at present the cat had the upper hand. Before Aden reached his place beside the emperor, his back still to the door, there was a pull on his soul. A pull that felt as if a vital part of his being was being torn away from him. Staggering, Aden reaching out and grabbed the nearest guard for support. Gasping for air, his hand on his chest, excruciating pain radiated from deep within his body threatening to consume him. There could be only one explanation. Tanis had walked into the room and the prophecy was coming to life.

Dear Gods! If the pain is this bad now, what will it be like when she is completely ripped from me? Aden did not want an answer to that question, but as the pain began to intensify he knew there was no avoiding the inevitable.

“Ah,” the emperor smiled seemingly ignoring the agony his apprentice was in. “Our guest has arrived. Now we will see history repeat itself.” Caius smiled slyly as Aden gathered enough strength to stumble to his position at his master’s right and turn to face the doors. Caius could sense Aden’s pain that was filling every cell in his body. So much emotion, so much agony he cannot control nor hide. This indeed will be interesting to watch. And he would enjoy every minute of it.

Broken Promises – Chapter 10

Chapter 10

Images flashing so quickly, one blurred into the next. Some as familiar as his own arm, others like a distance memory of another. As if he were reliving someone else’s life before switching yet to another, then back to his. Before he could catch his breath the images would carry him away again, spinning wildly. The only constant were a pair of hazel eyes that looked at him with such love that his very heart hurt from a loss he did not understand. Sometimes she lay in his arms, content and safe. Another she lay in someone else’s. Someone he felt he knew as if he were his own brother. There she to was content, but he felt as if there was a hole in his soul. One that only those hazel eyes could fill.

Soon those foreign memories began to override those of his wife and daughter, pushing them to the side as if they were of no consequence. The harder he tried to hold onto them, the quicker they slipped away. Like sand through his fingers. Wars he had never fought in, peace he never understood. Beautiful places he had never seen that left him breathless. Barren rock as far as the eye could see, desolate plains with winds filled with sand that could scour the very skin from your bones. Hell in its true form.

When Tanis woke, he was drenched with sweat and in a room he had never seen before. A strange shiny surface made up the walls. Some sort of light came from the edges of the ceiling, illuminating the dim room. A strange thin material covered him, silky soft, as were the pillows at his head. There were voices, hush and harried. A female voice desperate in her fear because he was not healing fast enough. That someone called the emperor would be furious if his fever did not break and he did not wake soon. Another, deeper, calmer, voice assuring the female that all would be good. Somehow they knew he was a healer, and that his body would not allow him to die. Not if the wounds were not fatal, and the blow Tanis receive to his head was not fatal.

Where was he?

He tried to remember the last thing he saw. It was a pair of pale blue eyes in a face that he had never seen before yet seemed familiar. Those eyes held curiosity and behind that a lot of fear. Power radiated off that being, so Tanis had no idea why he would fear him. Then images that felt fresh, new, as if they were happening as he lay on the floor seen through beautiful hazel eyes assaulted him. Legs, arms, bruising fingertips, pain, pleasure, a hunger that felt as if it would never be satiated, not for food, but for what those surrounding her bodies could give her. A circle of pain and pleasure, never ending unless they let go of life itself. That above all else had frightened Tanis. The one who belonged to those hazel eyes was losing their will to live. Somewhere deep inside Tanis, he recognized who that feeling belonged to, and to lose her when he was so close to holding her in his arms again clutched his heart painfully.

All of those images, the emotions, jumped from him to the being who touched him and the sudden clarity of who he was, what he was, almost sent Tanis into oblivion, but he fought it off because he had to warn the male doubled over in front of him.

“He’s awake!” the female cried in relief, interrupting Tanis’s thoughts.

Turning his head, he sought out the source of the voice. She seemed young, and the white uniform she wore was very unflattering to her slightly plump body, hugging in places that only emphasized that plumpness. Her brown eyes matched her brown hair that was braided away from her face in rows and held back by a band at the base of her neck. He only knew this because some of the strands fell over her shoulder. Her light brown skin was foreign to Tanis. He had never seen anyone with that color skin, but it was the other physician that truly alarmed him. That person, being, demon – Tanis was not sure what he was looking at – was a deep purple bordering on black. The red eyes and pointed ears that peeked out of shocking red hair only convince Tanis that his assessment of demon was true. When the creature smiled pointed teeth at him, he shrieked and scrambled backwards, falling off the other side of the bed with a loud thump.

“Oh my,” someone exclaimed mildly.

There was a long suffering sigh. “Really, Addy. How many times must I remind you not to smile at the patients. Especially the ones who are visiting.”

“I was merely trying to be friendly,” Addy pouted.

“There is nothing friendly about pointed teeth,” the other scolded.

Tanis lay on his back, trying to will the world to stop spinning. While most of his injuries were healed, his head was still tender and the jar from the fall had not help things. Neither had that embarrassing shriek. Did that really come out of his mouth. Way to make a first impression.

The dark skin female popped her head into his view, her smile gentle and without pointed teeth. “Sorry about that,” she apologized. “Addy keeps forgetting that not everyone is like her, but she’s harmless. She only eats every few days, and she had a huge breakfast this morning of raw dragonia and some fish native to her world. I was with her so I know she ate her fill.”

Was this suppose to make him feel better? What hell had he been dragged into? The only response that Tanis could muster was rapid blinking of his wide eyes.

“Come on, then,” the girl coaxed coming around the end of the bed to stand before him, holding out her hand. “My name is Fotina. I am so glad you are awake because we need to get you ready for the ceremony.” She gave him an appraising look, one eyebrow raised high on her forehead, and when she continued her voice had dropped a few octaves and sounded more sultry than cheerful. “And as much as I am enjoying the view, the emperor would rather you go clothed.”

With a quick glance, Tanis realized he wasn’t wearing any clothes. A quick grab and yank, and the thin material that was half on and off the bed was covering the more embarrassing parts.

She gave that long suffering sigh again, only this time it was tinged with regret. “If only we had time…”

“Tina!” Addy admonished, slapping her on the shoulder as she passed her by. “Put in back in the pants, girl, or you’ll lose more than your head.”

Shaking his head at the weirdness of the conversation, Tanis allowed the two females to help him to his feet then to the edge of the bed, where he sat down gratefully.

“Where am I?” he asked hoarsely, his head in his hands.

“You are on the star cruiser Rising Tempest,” Addy answered.

“Look at me,” Fotina ordered gently.

Tanis raised his head to see her knelt in front of him, that same friendly smile on her face.

“I need to check your eyes for any sign of damage,” she explained holding up a small metal wand that held light. When she saw Tanis’s eyes narrow in suspicion, her smile widened. Taking the light, she flashed it on her hand. “See. It won’t hurt, unless there is damage. Then it might not help any headache you may have.” To show him, she flashed it in her eyes. When she seemed unharmed, he grudgingly allowed her to do the same to him.

When the light hit his eyes, the images he had seen earlier came crashing back, engulfing his senses. When they cleared, he was staring up at the ceiling on his back and both Addy and Fotina staring down at him, frowning. He also knew that the female who was being abused was somewhere on this star cruiser, whatever the hell that was.

“What happened?” Fotina asked.

Tanis pushed himself up off the bed.

“Whoa,” Addy cautioned, standing in front of Tanis with her hands on his chest. “Just where do you think you are going?”

“I have to find her,” he answered hoarsely.

“Find who?” Fotina asked.

Tanis opened his mouth to answer then closed it. Who was he looking for? In all the images, there had never been a name attached to those hazel eyes. Only different shapes of faces.

“I don’t know,” Tanis frowned. The world spun and he sat down hard on the bed, bouncing. “All I know is she is on this ship and I have to find her before it’s too late.”

“Too late for what?” Addy asked.

“To save her,” Tanis whispered looking up at them.

The two females looked at each other and something passed between them. Some knowledge.

“You know who she is,” Tanis accused standing. Addy promptly pushed him back down on the bed.

“Hold on there, sparky,” she chided. “You aren’t going anywhere. Not without an escort, and certainly not without clothes.

Tanis decided she had a point, so after he has washed the blood and grime of Maura’s dungeons off him, he allowed the two healers to help him into the strange clothing that seemed to be common. Only instead of white, his were black. Somewhere in the middle of lacing up the strange shoes, he asked Fotina, “What is a sparky?”

Fotina laughed. “Just some slang that Addy picked up on some small planet we visited.”

“Planet?”

“Didn’t you know? A star cruiser is a ship that travels in the stars between worlds.”

Tanis sat on the bed unable to wrap his mind around what he had just learned. A ship that travels through the stars? He once again asked the questions that no one seemed to answer to his satisfaction.

Where the hell was he and why was he here?

It seemed forever before an escort arrived, which gave him time to heal the rest of his wounds, but instead of allowing Tanis to look for the female that was haunting his every thought, he was escorted through the strange metal halls to what he was told was the throne room. Finally something he understood. It still did not ease his fear the further he traveled through the strange city. He’d never seen anything like it before. Smooth metal panels with no handles slid open without a word leading into rooms. Lights turned on the moment you stepped into a room. The room they called a bathroom, where they showed him how to work the strange buttons that caused hot water to flow in abundance from a metal disk embedded in the ceiling. There was a magic wall they had called a replicator that when told what you wanted to eat or drink within seconds materialized on the small shelf embedded in the wall. Most of the people he saw hurrying up and down the halls wore something in their ear with a long slim metal piece that reached down their cheek, and when they talked into it apparently someone talked back. They called it technology, a word Tanis did not know or understand. What he did know was that nothing on Krynn prepared him for what he had experienced since he was taken from his home world. And when they passed a row of windows and he saw the blackness of space dotted with the stars of the heavens and his planet far below them, he stopped in awe. Yet there was something familiar about it.

Another memory through someone else’s eyes, yet familiar somehow. Looking out a window similar to the one he stared out now, only the stars were stretched into streaming lights. He was on a much smaller ship, speeding through space, running from something. Or was it running to something? Whichever it was, the tension in his body was high, his muscles taunt. What they were doing was risky, but it was the only thing he could think of to keep her safe.

Hands smoothed around his waist and up his chest. A feminine body pressed against his back as her arms tighten around him, holding him close, soothing him. Closing his eyes, he hugged those arms to him and relaxed into the embrace. Within those arms he felt powerful, complete. He felt as if nothing could harm them, which was a lie. Someone could harm them, could harm her, and he had to make sure that never happened.

“Why are you so tense?” she asked. “He cannot find us here.”

Tanis opened his eyes to stare out at the streaking stars. “You are a magnet to him. No matter where we go, he will find you. It is only a matter of time.” He turned in her arms to stare down into hazel eyes warm with love. Cupping her cheek, he gently brushed his lips with hers. “I cannot allow him to touch you. Not after what he has done,” he breathed resting his forehead against hers.

She sighed. “That is what I don’t understand. Why would he do such a thing? Never in all our lives has he ever done any harm to me, yet now…,” she struggled to put into words what she knew was true. Opening her eyes, she looked up at him with worry and fear. “It is as if he sold his soul to the devil himself.”

Tanis smiled at her metaphor. “You spent too much time on that backwards little planet,” he chided. “Their version of evil does not exist. It is only fairytale and myth to scare their weak into following the power hungry zealots.”

“Where that maybe true, you know as well as I that there is darkness in every corner of the universe. That it prays on the weak, promises them riches and immortality if they do its evil bidding. No matter what you call it, it is there. Waiting.”

“True,” Tanis sighed, “and I fear you are right. Somehow it has snared our brother, tipping the scales in its favor. I do not know how to….”

The ship rocked violently, sending them slamming into the glass wall. Just as suddenly it stopped, as if a hand grabbed it, yanking to a standstill. It threw them through the air, down the hall. They landed on the floor sliding a few more feet before stopping against another wall.

“What the hell was that?” Tanis snarled pushing himself shakily to his feet. Glancing outside he saw they were at a complete stop as the stars were no longer streaking by and there was the blackness of space looming before him.

“I don’t know,” she groaned rolling over onto her back, “but it hurt.”

A male dressed in white ran around the corner towards them, relief on his face when he saw they were alright. “Sir!” he called as Tanis helped her to her feet. “We’ve been hit!”

“By what?” he asked.

“Them,” the male answered pointing out the window.

They turned to see a massive black ship looming before them. Not their brother’s ship, but one just and deadly. Tanis had time to turn towards the woman beside him and utter, “I love you,” before the world turned fiery red.

Suddenly Tanis was standing on the deck of the star cruiser staring out at his home world. The sudden change was disorienting, and he had to grab onto the wall to keep from falling.

“Pretty impressive, is it not?” the elder who introduced himself as Commander Wells said stepping up beside him to stare out the window, misinterpreting Tanis reaction as fear of where they were.

“Who are you people?” Tanis whispered, his voice shaky.

Commander Wells moved his gaze to Tanis, his eyes showing humor as he answered calmly, “We are not so different from you.”

“I beg to differ,” Tanis scoffed pointing at his planet. “We cannot travel the heavens. You have this…technology that we do not.” Which was true, but it did not explain why at the same time it seemed familiar.

“We did not always have these…luxuries. Once, we were like you. Living in the dirt, off the land. We have just learned over the years how to make and use what was giving to us, as your world will one day.”

Tanis found that hard to believe. Looking back out at his planet, an emotion not his own engulfed him, making him stumble once again against the cold clear surface. An overwhelming sense of loss, of desire to end the pain. Surrounding that emotion were others that were desperate to keep whoever was willing themselves to die to live. The urge to find that person, that…female flared within him. Tanis felt if he could only see her, touch her, he could somehow heal her, protect her. That she was some vital part of his existence he needed to survive, but that was impossible. Tanis had not even seen the female so how could he feel as if he needed her like he needed air to breathe.

Wanting to understand, Tanis tentatively reached out to see if he could figure out what it was that drew him to her, if she was the same female that he saw in those strange memories. Just as the edges of his mind touched hers, something powerful slammed into his brain sending him reeling. The guards behind him caught Tanis before he hit the floor easing him down.

Commander Wells tsked him as if he were an errant child. The condescending tone did nothing to alleviate the irritation that bloomed inside Tanis. He was tired of being treated as if he were something lesser. He was a healer and a…what was he? Frowning, he tried to grasp the words that kept alluding him. Somehow he knew, if he could only grasp them, everything would become clear.

“You were trying to find her, weren’t you?” Wells chided squatting down next to the reeling healer. “You were warned about using your powers without the express permission of the emperor and now suffer the consequences for disobeying.”

“I do not know your emperor and owe him no allegiance,” Tanis hissed holding his head in his hands. It was if a hot knife had been shoved into his brain and continued to burn.

Using his thumb and pointer finger, Wells rubbed his eyes and sighed wearily. He had one stubborn male to deal with already. He did not need another. With a fair amount of irritation in his expression, he said in a calm tone he had learned in the years dealing with Aden’s mood swings, “A word of advice, son. The sooner you accept your fate, the less she will suffer for it.”

“Who will suffer?” Tanis snapped glaring at the male. “Why won’t anyone tell me why I am here? Who this female is?”

“You can sense her, can’t you,” a familiar voice breathed behind him.

Tanis turned his head to see the young lord that was on the planet. The one come to collect him and bring him here. Again the sense of familiarity slammed into him, but it was different than the female. She he felt as if he had known far longer than his short lifetime. This male had something familiar about in him his features, the feel of him. As if he was a part of Tanis, which would be impossible because Tanis had never met him before and they were from two completely different worlds. Yet.

Aden stopped before Tanis, staring thoughtfully down at him. His emotions were mixed and all over the place. On one hand he wanted to kill the bastard before him because he meant the end of his world. On the other, he knew he could not. Not so much because his master would be furious, but because he knew what this male was to Kara, and he would do everything in his power to see no harm came to her. Unfortunately, there had been very little in his power these last years.

“You sensed her on the planet. You knew what was happening to her,” Aden finished.

Tanis frowned up at him. What was he talking about? Did he mean the female he felt dying?

“Will you tell me who she is and why she is haunting me?” he asked.

“No,” Aden answered.

“Why not?”

“Because it is not time,” he answered absently. Without another word, the young lord turned and continued down the hall. “Do not be late,” he ordered before disappearing through a door.

“Yes, my lord,” Wells acknowledged. Turning to the men, he ordered, “Get him up.”

As two of the guards dragged Tanis to his feet, Commander Wells stared at the door Aden had disappeared through, thinking about the barely controlled rage simmering under the young lords calm façade. He knew Aden well enough to know it was his way of hiding his fear of what was to come. God only knew what would happen once the ceremony began. He managed to suppress the shudder that the memory of what Aden had become when Kara had been sent away. What would happen to him when she was completely ripped from him.

“Be glad the emperor has need of you or you would be dead right now,” Wells commented wearily, making a show of straightening the cuffs at his wrists so Tanis would know he was not important enough to warrant the commander’s full attention.

“Why does he hate me?” Tanis asked his breathing still ragged as he shrugged the guards off. “I have done nothing to him.”

“It is not what you have done, but what you will do,” the commander answered ominously, the smile sliding from his lips. When Tanis opened his mouth to retort, Wells cut him off. Repeating once again, “It will all become clear soon.” Ignoring the male’s narrowing eyes full of frustration, Well motioned the guards to follow.

Tanis stood unmoving, his anger being quickly replaced with trepidation as the memory of the female’s pain filled him. What would this emperor do to him? The question went unanswered as one of the guards shoved him forward. Glaring at him, Tanis followed the commander into the unknown.

Broken Promises – Chapter 9

Warning: This chapter is pretty intense as far as what happens to Kara sexually. If you do not like this sort of thing I would either skip down to the chapter that starts with “A small voice in the back of Kara’s mind laughed…” While I did try to tone it down, not everyone likes to read about rape, even though it fits in the story line.

Chapter 9

Kara lay on the tangled sheets slipping in and out of consciousness. Somewhere in the room there were voices talking. Something about rotations, but she did not care. All she cared about was that they were not touching her. The bed dipped, and she tensed, but no one touched her. A voice close to her rumbled a time, but he did not touch her. As long as they did not touch her the lust would fade and she could finally give into the darkness that hovered around the edges of her soul where there were no hands, no bodies, no hunger and no pain.

There was not a spot on her body, inside or out, that did not scream at her. Somewhere in their lust filled haze, pain had become an aphrodisiac. That was the worst part of her curse. Not only did the touch or thought of another rouse the thirst inside of her, it also rose that of the anyone who was in the room with them. Her power, for lack of a better term, amplified those lustful thoughts and spread them, infecting everyone within reach. The one with the strongest mind tended to dictate how the sex would go, and the strongest mind in the garrison had been Captain Hiram who had a cruel streak that rivaled Colin’s. As Kara lay on the bed, the endorphins wearing off so the pain began to override the pleasure, she thought maybe rivaled was not the right word. Dwarfed. That would be the word.

A hand caressed her calf, making her shiver and pulling a hoarse moan from her raw throat.

“My gods, she still hungers for more. Too bad I don’t have time to enjoy her again,” a deep masculine voice chuckled.

“Don’t worry,” Hiram crooned. “I will enjoy her for the both of us.”

“I’m surprised she’s still alive,” another mused. Gentle hands moved the hair from Kara’s face before lightly brushing fingertips along her cheekbone. “The bruises are almost faded. She heals fast.”

“Which is why we must not let her rest. She is here for punishment. Allowing her time to heal would defeat the purpose of this lesson,” Hiram said.

Kara managed to open the one eye that was not swollen completely shut to see the male that was touching her face with a gentle hand. He was squatted down next to the bed frowning at her. Not all the males of the Red Garrison were happy about Hiram’s orders that they were to use her has painfully as possible. Some of them even left, a few had taken her into their rooms and had been very gentle. The majority, however, had been too caught up in the pull of her power that Hiram was directing to care.

“I still don’t understand what she did to warrant this kind of punishment,” the male in front of her said. He looked towards where Kara was sure Hiram sat. She closed her eye, unable to keep it open any longer. “The emperor protects her like a prize possession. To just throw her at us like so much garbage isn’t like the him.”

“Are you questioning our master?” Hiram asked, his voice low and dangerous.

“No,” the male quickly answered, a thread of fear in his voice. He must have stood, because he was no longer touching her. “We should go. Our shift starts shortly, and I need a shower.”

“You do that,” Hiram growled.

The bed moved again as the door hissed open. Footsteps then the door hissed shut, leaving the room in silence, but Kara knew she was not alone. She could feel Hiram’s eyes boring into her, his lustful thoughts fill her head. No, she was not alone, and she would not know the blessed darkness that she so craved anytime soon.

Dropping a naked female in the middle of ten males who had not had a woman in months was like dropping a single steak in a cage full of starving lions. Especially with Kara’s special ability to take the lust of one man’s thoughts and spread it out to others pulsing from her, and Hiram had made sure those thoughts had to do with not only lust, but pain. Within seconds the men had grabbed her arms and legs, carried her to the nearest table and slammed her on top of it. Another second and there was a male between her legs forcing himself inside her while another climbed onto the table near her head, shoving himself into her mouth. When one male was finished another took that male’s place, barely giving her time to breathe between assaults.

More of the garrison’s guards began to appear, saying that they had been released from duty for the rest of the day and were to report to their barracks for an unexpected surprise. When they saw what was happening on the kitchen table, was sucked in by the growing lust that filled the room, they were more than eager to join in the fun.

On his various trips with the emperor to Colin’s planet, Hiram had heard rumors of how easily the witch could be seduced if the right measures were taken. That she may fight in the beginning, but by the time they were through with her, she was begging for more. The most intriguing piece of information was that the harsher the abuse, the more she responded. Ever since he had heard this, Hiram had wanted to see if those rumors were true. As he watched his men brutally rape the female, he decided that today he would take full advantage of this ‘gift’ and find out just how far they could take her before she begged them to stop.

When the last of the twenty-five men had had their fill of the witch and she was on the floor gagging and gasping for breath, her body shaking with pain, Hiram motioned two of the men to pull her to her feet. Taking in the disheveled hair, the multiply bruises and teeth marks all over her body, the blood, his desire to have her grew tenfold. Grabbing a hold of her chin he forced her head up so he could look into her eyes. What he saw hardened him even further. Along with the pain and fear there was a great deal of desire in those eyes. There were many times during the last hour he had seen her body convulse in orgasm. When she had a moment to breathe she had even screamed them.

“So the rumors are true,” he purred. “You crave the abuse of men in your bed. That is good, because for the next few hours that is all you will receive from me.”

Tightening his grip on her jaw, he forced her mouth open so he could viciously kiss her while his hand went between her legs. Kara fought the men holding her until her cries of pain turned into moans of pleasure. Smiling wickedly, Hiram moved far enough away so he could watch her eyes close in obvious pleasure to his harsh touch. Just before she was to orgasm he stopped. Her whimper of protest brought laughter from the men around them watching.

“We will have fun with this one,” Hiram sneered. “And now that you men have had your fill, the real punishment will begin.” Stepping back, he addressed those men. “While the emperor has sent his witch to us for our pleasure, he has also sent her to us as punishment for her traitorous thoughts. I think we should fulfill the emperor’s wishes to the fullest.”

“How much can she take before she dies?” one of the men asked clearly not wanting to be on the emperor’s bad side.

Hiram’s eyes widen in glee as Kara’s eyes flew open, full of dread, as he revealed a secret he had been keeping for some time. One that would be revealed to all later that day. “The witch is immortal, so aside from taking her head, she will survive whatever we decide is necessary to teach her her lesson.” Reaching down, Terrance slowly unbuckled his wide leather belt, “and what better way to start her sentence than a beating she will not soon forget.”

With a nod of his head the two holding Kara turned her around and slammed her over to the table so her ass was exposed for what was to come. A man on each side holding her arms, Terrance wrapped one end of his belt around his hand and began beating her until his arm tired and her screams had turned to whimpers. Throwing his belt to the floor, his breaths labored, he unbuttoned his pants, moving so he was behind her. Rubbed himself along her ass to let her know just how large he was, he leaned over her, making sure he pressed the buttons of his pants against her raw skin, relishing her whimpers of pain.

Taking her long hair, wrapping it around his hand before digging his fingers into it at the scalp, he yanked her head back painfully, his lips at her ear, “Now it’s my turn,” he whispered harshly.

Moving his hips back, positioning himself, he shoved himself inside her with one cruel stroke. Kara screamed, struggling to get free of those holding her. The men that held her arms let go, but Hiram kept his grip firmly in her hair, not relenting until she screamed at least three times in orgasm.

Afterwards he had sat back and watched his men do their worst. Kara tried to fight a few times, but it always ended up with someone’s belt or the cattails that someone had gone to retrieve from one of the torture rooms, marring her already raw skin. They had not cared where they had beaten her. Nothing was safe from their cruelty.

Hiram looked down at her taking in the multiple welts, the bruising, and grew hard just thinking of what he was about to do to her, but first he needed her conscious. Some of the earlier wounds from six hours ago had healed, but with twenty-five men there was little if no time in between each one for her to even catch a breath. Now it was once again his turn. How many had it been? Four, five? He honestly had lost track. No matter.

“Wake up little whore,” he ordered slapping her ass. “Come on. Wakey, wakey.”

Kara groaned as the captain kept slapping her on various parts of her body. When he reached her face, she raised her hands to stop the onslaught.

“I am not done with you yet,” Hiram sneered grabbing a handful of hair and twisting her head so she looked up at him. “The emperor wants you punished for disobeying him and I intend to do just that. But there is another who needs to be reminded of his place and that you are off limits to him.”

“Please,” Kara begged weakly as she grabbed his wrist in an attempt to lessen the pain. “No more. I beg you.”

“You beg me?” he mocked throwing her head back on the bed before taking a hold of her ankle and flipping her onto her stomach. “You have not even begun to beg. I see how he looks at you when he thinks no one is watching. The emperor is very displeased with the both of you.”

Kara cried out when he yanked her towards him, letting her feet drop onto the floor once again. She knew what he was about to do and tried to crawl away. Grinding his knee into her lower back he gave her two hard whacks on her already raw ass. She cried out tears streaming down her face.

“When I am done with you will cringe at the thought of another man touching you,” he promised grabbing her hips and pulling her to him. She screamed when he once again brutally shoved himself into her. “Sahen will think twice before he touches you now, knowing how many men you have pleasured today. Knowing how much you actually enjoyed it every time they fucked you,” he sneered when he heard her moan.

A small voice in the back of Kara’s mind laughed at the captain’s attempt to humiliate her. What these men had done to her was nothing new. She had moved past humiliation a long time ago, but the captain was right about one thing. It was the one punishment she tried to avoid at all cost. Aden knew what Colin had forced on her and had never judged her for her body’s responses to this form of abuse. It had become almost impossible for her to feel anything during sex without some sort of pain. But the fact this was being done to her because he wanted to make a point to Aden. That he had no claim to her, would make it worse for him.

Through the haze of pain and pleasure that had begun to envelope her, Kara realized the captain had stopped his assault. His fingers seemed to reluctantly release her, his body slowly moving away. When he touched her no more, Kara’s legs refused to hold her and she slipped to the floor in a heap.

“You…don’t know…what you are…doing,” she heard the captain gasp as if he had to force the words out of his lungs.

Kara looked up through her tangled hair to see the captain hanging a few feet in the air clutching at some unseen force that held him by the throat. She followed his gaze, whimpering at what she saw, the humiliation Hiram had tried so hard to inflict on her finally washing over her.

Aden stood in the doorway, his hand stretched out before him, his fingers bent as if he clutched the captain’s throat with them. His face was a mask of rage, his eyes glowed red as his body shook. With sudden and frightening realization, Kara knew that it was not Aden Sahen, a powerful sorcerer, standing before her, but a god in full fury.

“I was only following orders,” the captain choked.

“I highly doubt he told you to use her until you killed her,” Aden snarled.

The captain managed a wicked smile even though he was slowly turning blue as he dangled naked in midair. “I was told to use her as I wished, which we all did with the greatest of pleasure,” he sneered.

Aden turned his hand only slightly and the captain neck broke with an audible snap. Lowering his hand, the captain dropped to the floor with a crash. Aden stared at the lifeless body doing his best to reign in his blind rage. The emperor would not be pleased he had killed the captain of his personal guard, again, but when Aden had walked into the room and saw what he was doing to Kara, heard what he had said, heard her hoarse cries of pain he had lost control. A soft sound brought his attention to the huddled creature on the floor and the rage instantly melted into alarm.

Kara had tried to pull herself onto the bed where she could cover herself with the blankets, but her arms and legs would not cooperate. Rushing to her side, Aden pulled her into his arms where she began sobbing hysterically.

“I am so sorry,” he breathed into her matted hair as he held her to him. “I should have never left. I should have stayed and protected you.” When he tried to move her so he could look her over, she cried out in agony. “What have they done to you?” he breathed taking in all the bruising and blood. “I will kill them all,” he snarled.

“No, Aden,” Kara pleaded her voice a hoarse whisper. “It won’t help. They have done nothing that has not been done to me before,” she softly added doing her best not to look him in the eye.

Aden warred between doing as she asked and going on a rampage until he had fulfilled his vow and every man who had touched her no longer breathed. Finally reasoning won out and he allowed the exhaustion from the last weeks wash over him. He was tired of the constant worry, the pain, the anger and frustration, the helplessness that he fought every day so he could be strong for both of them. More than anything he wanted to take Kara someplace where they could live in peace. Someplace where no one, mortal or immortal, would ever find them.

“I don’t understand. Why he would do this to you?” he whispered not even trying to keep the tears from his eyes as he brushed her hair away from her face. “This is Colin’s cruelty, and there are numerous times Caius has raged against Colin inflicting it on you. I never thought he would sink this low.”

“I would not do what he commanded. Could not,” Kara answered wiping the tears from her face, wincing when she touched a tender area.

“What was that?”

Kara’s only answer was to finally look sadly into his eyes. It was all Aden needed. In that one look he saw in his mind everything that had happened after he had left the throne room. That Caius had once again asked Kara to do the impossible, and she had refused him. The captain had been right. This was his punishment as much as hers.

“Kara,” he breathed pulling her close, wanting to take away the pain he had caused her. He quickly loosened his grip when she cried out once again.

“You shouldn’t be here,” she whispered hoarsely, choking back her sobs. “If he finds you….”

“He sent me here,” Aden interrupted furiously. “He wanted me to find you like this. As the captain told you, he thought seeing you with another man would change the way I feel about you. What our master fails to realize is there is nothing he can do to either of us that can change my love for you. Nothing.” Not even her being torn from him. Kissing Kara’s forehead, Aden gathered her gently in his arms. “I need to take you to your room. Today everything will change, and you must be strong enough to survive what is to come.” I must be strong enough, he thought to himself. Somehow he knew he could never be that strong.

Carefully wrapping Kara in a blanket, Aden picked her up. When she fell limp in his arms, he feared he had lost her, but the subtle moving of her chest told him she was still alive. It did not alleviate the dread of what was to come. Today he would lose her forever to another and there was nothing he could do to stop it. Aden was one of the most powerful sorcerers that had ever lived, but as he was painfully reminded just now not as powerful as his master.

The men in the common room had vanished.

“Cowards,” Aden snarled in disgust.

Picking the thin material off the back of the chair, he carried Kara back to her room; the dark foreboding expression on his face as he strode down the hall sending people scrambling out of his way. Once inside the small quarters that were attached to Caius’s, Aden called for the healer and Kara’s serving woman. When they arrived, they informed him that the emperor wanted to see him immediately. The last thing Aden wanted to do was leave Kara, but then Caius knew that. It was yet another test of his loyalty and obedience that left Aden gritting his teeth, but he knew it would be much worse if he prolonged it any further. Not wanting to give the bastard another reason to punish Kara, and with the promise he would return soon, he went to face their master.

Aden stopped outside the room next to Kara’s, putting his hand on the door and closing his eyes. He could feel the occupant’s fear and yet there was something else. With a start, Aden understood Tanis’s strange behavior down on the planet. As far away as he was from the her, he could already sense Kara’s presence, and the prophecy was already beginning to unfold.

Aden pulled his hand away from the door, wondering if the emperor knew what he was doing. If Tanis had half the power Kara possessed, together they could very well destroy them all.

Broken Promises – Chapter 8

Chapter 8

It took every ounce of willpower Aden possessed not to seek out Kara the moment his feet hit the metal deck of the landing bay. When he had called in his approach, he received very specific orders from the emperor that he was to make sure the package was placed in the rooms he had been assigned and that he was properly taken care of by a healer. He was not to leave until he was certain Tanis would be able to walk on his own to the throne room later that day for the ceremony. It had taken forever for the healer to arrive and longer for her to assure him that Tanis would not die from his head injury or the malnutrition.

The second half of his orders was to report to the throne room once that was done. When Aden finally entered the throne room three hours later, the Emperor was standing where Aden had left Kara. A quick glance around the room proved she was not in her usual place, on the left side of the throne on a stack of pillows. Lower than her master, but close enough to touch. His stomach tightening further with fear, Aden strode up behind the emperor and bowed.

“I trust the package has arrived safely and as promised,” the emperor inquired calmly, not bothering to turn around. He had seen Aden’s glance at the dais in the reflection of the windows, felt his anxiety that Kara was not where she should be, and it infuriated him. When would the boy learn that Kara was none of his concern? That she was his to do with as he pleased. The small voice imprisoned in the back of his head screamed his objections. Caius ignored him.

“He’ll survive, if barely,” Aden answered straightening.

“Was there trouble?” Caius asked, turning just his upper body so that he could look at Aden with one eyebrow risen in surprise.

“He tried to kill one of her guards today. They almost killed him in return. The healer was able to keep him alive, but it will still be sometime before he has completely regained his wits.”

“Did you kill the guard?” Caius asked mildly, turning back to the window.

“I killed them both. I do not think the queen fully understood the power we hold. She does now.”

“Good, good,” Caius mused. Turning he slowly made his way to his dais. “Maura might have been one of the galaxies best thieves, but it was her arrogance that led to her being stranded on that little planet. I suppose she tried to coerce you into taking her with you. Using her body as a lure.” A foot was on the bottom step when he paused to look at Aden, a small smile playing around the edge of his lips. “I hear she is particularly well verse in the carnal arts. It would be a shame not to partake in one so willing when there are so few here to slake a young one such as yourself thirst.”

Their conversation had been civil, master to apprentice, but with this last question Aden had sensed the dangerous mood his master was in. A trap had been laid, and if Aden wanted to survive he needed to tread carefully. Still, he could not keep that disgust off his face at the thought of touching such a creature.

“She tried,” he scoffed. “I do not like my women power hunger or too eager.”

“No. You only crave the ones you cannot have,” Caius snarled.

The trap sprung.

Aden averted his eyes.

Sighing, Caius turned and continued up the three stairs to his dais where he turned and sat down, allowing the silence to drag to fill the room. Finally he spoke, his voice once more calm. That alone frighten Aden.

“You have only your weakness for what is not yours to blame for what was done.”

“What do you mean?” Aden breathed, his eyes locking with Caius. The tightness that had been constricting his heart since Tanis’s strange plea twisted.

“We have a celebration to ready ourselves for,” Caius answered, purposely ignoring Aden’s question. That part of him deep in his head clutched his head and moaned, dropping to his metaphorical knees. Like Aden, Caius could feel every touch, hear every thought, feel every emotion as the guards did their worst and then some to Kara. Where the part of him that sat glaring at Aden reveled in her misery, the part that tried in vain to break his bonds, to retake control, recoiled. That part would have never inflicted this kind or horror on the woman he loved.

You are weak, the demon sneered, for in many cultures that was what he was. A demon. It was not what he started out as, but for what he had become it was an apt description, and the end was near. He could taste it. Once the ritual was finished they could move forward, and he would finally have what he so deserved.

Complete domination of all those living and dead in every known and unknown universe. Then those who sought to control him, to keep him caged would learn their place. At his feet.

“Did you punish Maura for her failure?” he asked. Aden’s startled expression answered before the boy could.

“I was too concerned with the health of our prize. When I saw the condition he was in, I immediately brought him here,” Aden answered.

Liar, Caius snarled. Out loud he said, “It is to late to go back now. After the ceremony I want you to go down and make sure she never disappoints us again. Until then, go and ready yourself. The ceremony begins in a few hours.”

His face as blank as he could make it, Aden bowed, his mind racing with the implications of him being away from Kara when he knew the mood the emperor was in. “My lord,” he answered in acknowledgement of his orders, his voice empty of emotion. Turning, he started out of the room only to be stopped by Caius quiet voice once again.

“But first, I would like you to go down to the Red Guards garrison room.”

Aden stopped short, his earlier fear of what was happening to Kara twisting his stomach. There was something in Caius’s voice that turned Aden’s blood to ice. It was lower, more of a growl than usual. Sinister.

“May I ask why?” he asked as casually as he could manage, not daring turn around to face him. Where he may be able to keep his voice empty, he could not keep his expression the same.

“You will see when you arrive.”

“As you wish,” Aden said bowing his head before leaving the room.

Caius smiled knowing how hard it would be for Aden hold his temper and not kill any of his master’s personal guard once he saw for himself his fears were true. Caius thought for a moment about warning them Aden was coming but decided that seeing for himself what will happen if he harbored the same traitorous thoughts Kara had, losing one or two men was worth having his young apprentice once again under his control and focused on the end prize.

*    *    *

Once Aden was clear of the throne room, he broke out in a run, shoving people out of his as he raced through the hallway towards the Red Guard garrison. Once again he reached out for Kara again but was only able to feel bits and pieces. It was if something was blocking him. The glimpses he did received were still a jumble of fear, pain, and pleasure, only so faint he was afraid once he did find her he would be too late.

The closer he came to the garrison the clearer the feelings became and the more his own terror grew. He was almost positive his master would not stoop to Colin’s level and give her to his men to do as they willed. The thought that he did exactly that turned the part of Aden’s heart that had been warmed by Kara cold. If Caius had given her to the garrison just after he had left the ship, it meant she would have been at the mercy of upwards to twenty-five men for at least six hours.

Oh dear Gods!

When he burst into the garrison, the smell of sex, sweat and an underlining metallic tang of blood turned Aden’s terror into rage. Eyes blazing red fire, he scanned the nearly empty room. Two men who were laughing as they walked out of a side room tucking in their shirts stopped dead when they saw Aden and the murderous look in his eyes. Three others who had been sitting in various places jumped to their feet to stand at attention. The show of respect did not help his rage because it showed that they were naked and well satisfied. Eyes narrowed, Aden’s swept the rest of the room, falling onto Kara’s dress neatly draped over a nearby chair.

No!

“Where is she,” he snarled his eyes going back to the first two he had seen.

Their eyes darted to each other before they moved to the side clearing the way to the bedroom door they had just come through. Aden strode towards the closed door, bringing both hands up palms out as he passed between the men, sending them crashing into the walls on opposite sides of the room. If they were not already dead, he would finish the job once he had Kara safely in his arms. Anyone who had touched her would not see the next hour, consequences be damned.

Broken Promises – Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Queen Maura sat on her throne glaring at the daze healer the two idiots she had assigned to keep him alive dumped at her feet. Said idiots promptly took five healthy steps back and stood closer to the door than their queen. Not that that would save them. No. Once their visitor had collected his package she would string them up in the healer’s place and teach them a lesson they would soon not forget.

Slowly, her hand gripping her staff in an attempt to stem her anger, electricity sizzling across the medallion at the top, Maura stood. Today for their special guest she wore her favorite outfit. The material was modest in cut. A halter style top that tied at the back of her neck and mid back, covering her small breasts while leaving her back bare. The skirt flowed around her, a silver belt holding it in place low on her ample hips, draping down around her legs with a small train. But that was where the modesty ended. The translucent white material left nothing to the imagination and set off her dark creamy skin to perfection. Holding her long shocking white hair in place was a circlet of red gold, twisted in an intricate design with a large white jewel set in the middle.

Immediately those who surrounded her, including the guards, dropped to one knee, head bowed. As befitting one of her station, she thought with an evil gleam in her grey eyes. She was a goddess after all. Dropped from the heavens the gods know how many years ago, when she stumbled out of the woods covered in soot and dirt the natives saw her exotic looks and the fact she had emerged from the place of The Great Release as a sign from the heavens that she was here to save them. What they didn’t know was that she was an interstellar thief running from the authorities and was shot down on this backwater little planet and left for dead. She had hoped to entice the handsome Lord Sahen into taking her with him and far away from this technological void she had been forced to live in.

As she neared the healer who lay crumpled on the floor, her dreams of escaping dwindled. She was not ignorant of who Aden Sahen or his emperor were. Rumors of their power and thirst for domination were the stuff of nightmares told to little children who did not obey their parents. Maura had seen for herself what was left of a world that refused to bow down to them. Now they were here, and what she promised them was half dead at her feet. With a tap of her rod on Tanis’s side, a small jolt of electricity shot through the healer’s body forcing him to turn over. When Maura saw the growing bruise on the side of his face her temper exploded.

“You fools!” she bellowed. “I cannot deliver him in this condition. He was to be broken, not damaged beyond repair.”

“We are sorry mistress, but if I hadn’t backhanded him, Tenan would be dead,” Reyal whined.

“Better him than the entire world,” she hissed. “Get a healer in here immediately. Maybe we can fix this before it’s too late.”

“Too late for what,” a calm authoritative voice asked.

The queen whirled around to see Aden standing in the doorway of her throne room, two men dressed in red behind him. Her first thought was how handsome the young sorcerer was. The second was she wondered what he would look like without his long black coat or the black shirt tucked into tight black pants. As he strode closer she realized he wore black boots that rose to just under his knees. How delicious it would be to strip those boots and pants slowly down those long legs, and lick her way back up to what she was positive was as impressive as the sorcerer himself. Those wicked thoughts were quickly replaced by apprehension when Tanis groaned behind her and Aden’s eyes narrowed, flashing red.

“My Lord Sahen,” she cooed swaying up to him. “So wonderful to finally meet you. I had not expected to see you until after the noon meal.”

Aden regarded the queen with indifference. Although a handsome woman, the clothes, or lack thereof, she wore disgusted him. It reminded him of the outfits Caius forced Kara to wear when he wanted to distract his enemies during negotiations with thoughts of Kara theirs for a night. It had taken every ounce of will power not to kill the bastards with every leer or carnal thought that raced unfiltered across their faces. Every one of those thoughts that Kara could hear, feel while she stood by the emperor’s side like some expensive toy the emperor had brought out to show and tell, but not touch. It had been physically painful for Kara not to act on those thoughts, a side effect of what she called her curse that the emperor took great delight in.

“We arrived earlier than expected. The Emperor wants to finish our transaction so we can move on to more important tasks,” Aden gruffly answered the queen. He wanted to be gone from this place as quickly as possible. Something was not right. He just could not figure out what it was.

“More important?” the queen repeated, unable to keep indignation out of her voice that she was obviously being dismissed. Pasting an expression on her face that promised Aden any desire he wished, Queen Maura sashayed towards him, placing a hand on his arm and sliding it up to his shoulder as she move so her body was a breath away from his. “But I thought you were to bring the girl here and they would both be trained by my men,” she pouted.

As if he would allow her men to touch Kara. Ignoring her obvious ploy to distract him with her body, Aden brushed past her to where Tanis lay groaning. Squatted down next to him, Aden studied the man. A large bruise covered the upper half of the left side of Tanis’s face. His dark shoulder length hair was wet and combed away from his face which was gaunt as was his body from malnutrition. Outward there was nothing special about this man. A simple healer that had led a simple life. Six months. They had given Maura six months to break this man, yet his mind was still whole. Still a threat. It spoke of an inner-strength that was as rare as the woman who waited for them up on the emperor’s ship.

So this is the man that will take Kara from me, Aden thought. A wave of intense jealousy had his hand up as if he were going to strangle Tanis before he could think of the consequences. Quickly Aden reigned in his powers before he did something very foolish. Bringing Tanis to his master dead would do neither him nor Kara any good. But before he could stand, Tanis grabbed Aden’s wrist with the strength that belayed his weaken state. His dark blue eyes flew open locking with Aden’s, freezing him where he crouched.

“Help her,” he croaked.

Images of arms and legs intertwined, bodies moving, skin against skin, rough hands, stings of leather. Moans of pain and pleasure, of cruel laughter and pleas for mercy that would never come. The sense of hopelessness and loss of will to go on as a life force slowly diminished.

Gasping, Aden stumbled backwards, his eyes wild as the world spun around him. As his eyes darted around the room, the images in his head slowly fading as the room around him came into focus. The first person he saw was the queen, who stood frozen with one hand on her chest and eyes wide. The rest of her people looked at him with more than a little fear. The two men he brought with him watched with dispassionate eyes, used to the oddness that was ever present in their world.

“Are you alright, Lord Sahen?” Queen Maura asked taking a step forward, a worried frown on her beautiful face.

Was he alright? The images filled his vision again along with the confused emotions of unbridled pleasure and despair. The emotions cut through him, piercing his heart and driving him to his knees. One hand on the ground while the other clutched the front of his shirt over his heart, he looked at Tanis who was watching him and gasped, “What have you done to me?”

“You have to save her,” Tanis whispered hoarsely, reaching for Aden. “She will not last much longer.”

With a sudden clarity that drained the color from Aden’s face, he knew who Tanis was talking about and what those images meant. “He wouldn’t,” he breathed in horror.

Tanis’s only answer was a stricken expression and a slight nod of his head. Those dark blue eyes that shone with deep knowledge and intelligence dimmed and became confused, dazed. Glancing around him, his hand going to his head as he winced in pain, Tanis mumbled, “Where am I? What’s going on?”

The terror that consumed Aden at what was being done to Kara squashed down the questions that rose about Tanis’s sudden change in behavior. He had to get back to the ship. Now.

“The deal has been altered,” Aden announced in the quiet as he lurched to his feet. With a motion of his hand, his guards started for Tanis. As they hauled him to his feet and began to carry him out of the room, Aden turned his murderous glare to the Queen who blanched. “I hope the Emperor is not too displeased with his condition,” Aden snapped.

“Two of my men claimed he tried to kill them. They acted in self-defense,” the queen explained quickly.

“Are they still alive?” Aden followed the queen’s gaze to the two guards who were kneeling by the wall vainly trying to be invisible. With a flick of his wrist they both fell over, dead.

The queen gasped at the sheer power it would have taken her to do such a thing but seemed so easy to this Sorcerer. She looked back at Aden wide-eyed, realizing that the rumors were true and maybe she would be better off staying on this backward little planet. Especially with the mood the foul mood the sorcerer was now in. Without even so much as a glance at her, he strode out of the throne room.

Aden ignored the queen, who was calling out to him, desperate to get back to the ship. Never in his wildest dreams did he thing Caius would do something so vile. They had talked many times about going back and killing Colin for what he forced on Kara, and now….

Closing his eyes Aden sought Kara out with his mind. When he finally found her, the images and feelings that came back to him were a jumble. The fear and pain he felt before slammed into him again. Staggering, he grabbed the wall for support. Shit! Racking his brain trying to figure out what they had done to upset the emperor enough to warrant this kind of punishment, Aden ran for his cruiser, desperate to return to home as quickly as possible to prove his fears wrong.

Broken Promises – Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Kara stared out of the window of Caius’s immense spaceship onto the planet below, the cowl of the rich green silk cloak that covered her from neck to foot lying against her back, highlighting her deep auburn hair that reach down to her lower back. Under the cloak she wore a white dress made of sheer silk. The material was layered so there was only a glimpse of the pale skin that lay beneath. At each shoulder was a delicate silver clasp that held the dress in place, so with a click it would fall away from her body. The deep V neckline exposed a pale line of skin down to her bellybutton. Just below that a silver belt delicately engraved with vines and flowers rested low on her hips. The piece was beautiful, and if Kara had been less exhausted, less numb she would have admired it.

Caius had always lavished her with gifts like this after a conflict where the nightmares she inflicted on their enemies were particularly gruesome. It was his way of apologizing for forcing those images into her own head, because what the victim saw, so did Kara. Yet on the times she had fought him, refused to do his bidding, he used those same nightmares against her. Forcing her to relive them as if they were her own. It was as if two different people lived inside of him. One who care for her, was gentle with her, maybe even loved her in his own way. The other used her, forced her to do things for the only reason that it would hurt her, and he enjoyed her pain, was viscous in his punishments, a monster in every sense of the word.

When they first arrived on the ship, she had caught a glimpse of the man who cared for her well-being even though she was his to command, to use. That glimpse had been fleeting. Once she and Aden refused to break their bond the monster roared to life. When Aden told Caius that they could not break something magical when they did not know how it was forged, and that even if they could they would not, the monster exploded.

Kara did not know how long she spent in that small white room with no windows or doors screaming. The short coarse shift she had been given to wear lay in shreds on the cold floor, her pain so intense, unrelenting, that she had shredded the thin material to reach her skin. Praying that if she spilled enough blood the pain would bleed out with the precious fluid. She begged, pleaded, promised things she would have never conceived of doing, just to stop the pain. Nothing short of her denying Aden would suffice. The one command she could obey.

On the other side of a wall size two-way mirror that looked like a blank wall on Kara’s side, Aden was trapped in his own room, helplessly watching. With Kara’s screams echoing around him, unable to reach her, to help her in anyway, he too had promised things that had made him cringe in revulsion. Begged Caius to punish him, not her, but the emperor had refused.

There was a time when Aden thought his power rivaled Caius’s. Now he knew different. With barely a thought, without any effort, Caius bound Aden’s powers completely. Bound them then left him unable to stop the torturous pain Caius inflicted with gleeful abandonment on Kara, laughing as he watched Aden break in front of him. All because Aden dared to love her. He had asked Caius who he really was, because the man who stood before him was not the man he had grown to respect, to love as a mentor.

“I am someone more powerful then you could ever imagine. As powerful as the gods themselves,” Caius had seethed. “And you will do well to remember that Kara is mine to do whatever I wish. She will obey me. As will her mate. As will you.”

“I cannot give you what you want,” Aden cried desperate to make Caius understand that he asked the impossible. On the other side of the mirror Kara’s screams intensified. Aden tightly closed his eyes and looked away, the agony that sound caused him threatening his sanity.

“Cannot, or will not,” Caius quietly hissed, his own rage barely contained at Aden’s refusal to do as he was told. Aden could not meet Caius’s eyes, his silence an answer on its own. His voice squeezed down to a whisper in his rage, Caius repeated, “I will ask you one more time. Break your connection with Kara, or you will both wish for a death that will never come.”

“You have taken everything from us,” Aden agonized whisper filled the sudden silence. Eyes filled with defiance, he glared up at the monster before him and hissed, “You can do your worst, but we will not give you the only thing that makes our existence bearable.”

For a long moment they glared at each other. Aden on his knees, his conviction and determination etched in his expression. Caius looming over him, his rage mounting with every second Aden refused to bow down to his authority.

“So be it,” Caius hissed into the silence.

With a swish of his cloak, Caius turned and left the room, the metal door whooshing shut behind him. The moment the soft click of the door sounded Kara’s screams began once again. Closing his eyes, Aden slowly bent over until his forehead touched the cold metal floor, agony washing over him. Nothing short of total obedience would stop their torment, and that was something neither of them could give.

Then, suddenly, it stopped.

Kara felt gently arms lift her from the floor of her cell. Exhausted, her mind clinging desperately to what little sanity she had left, the only thing she remember in those next hours were flashes of light from the ceiling as she was carried back to her rooms. Of gentle hands washing the blood from her already healing body, each ragged gash tended to so it would not scar. Of her tangled hair being carefully brushed out, each tangle handled with care not to hurt her as they were pulled apart. Of being laid on a soft bed and being tucked under warm blankets. Of blessed pain free, dream free darkness.

Now, as Kara stared down at the innocent planet, she wondered what had changed. Why had the torment ended when it was obvious they had not given Caius what he wanted? It had something to do with this planet, but she had not the opportunity to ask Aden and she was too afraid to ask Caius. His anger was there, just under the surface, so she made it her life’s mission to be as invisible as possible so she would not bring his wrath down upon her again.

A calm soothing presence drew near her, enveloping her with a love so warm, so deep she felt the lingering pain of the last weeks subside. Closing her eyes, Kara allowed herself to fall into that warmth if only a moment. Then, very gently, she began to pull away.

Aden, her mind breathed into his. You take a big risk doing this out in the open. If Caius found out…. She let the thought finish itself. Opening her eyes, Kara fixed them on the planet before her as Aden came to a stop next to her, his eyes also on the offending planet.

Down there was the man who would take Kara from him. Down there was her destiny, his destruction If he had been given any wish he desired, it would be to take her as far away from here as possible.

It is a risk I am willing to take if it gives you a moment of peace, he countered. He projected a mental image of him wrapping his arms around her, pulling her back against him. So real was the image they both felt the heat of each other’s bodies. His love, his need for this woman defied logic. She was his drug he could not get enough of. He was addicted to her and he never wanted to be cured. Feeling her shiver against him, he mentally nuzzled her neck. Again this was a huge risk he was taking, because if Caius caught them he would punish them both. Aden was not sure either of them could survive another round of the last two weeks. When he thought about how long they have been trapped in their never ending cycle of torment, he shuddered.

“I will not allow him to deny us this one pleasure,” Aden vowed adamantly yet quietly as he gazed down at her. He took a step closer.

“Aden,” Kara began, but before she could turn towards him or assure him that she would not give in to Caius’s demand, that she loved him too much to lose him, she hissed in pain.

The pain in her lower back that radiated up to her lungs and outwards was so sharp it took her to her knees. Because they were wrapped around each other in their minds, the pain leaped into Aden. Gasping, he grabbed onto one of the steel girders that held the windows in place before his knees could collapse from under him. Quickly backing his mind away from hers so he could think clearly, Aden stared at her in horror before looking towards the doors, feeling his master’s murderous glare from across the room.

The black cloaked figure moved slowly across the room, his pale blue eyes gleaming from under his cowl. Raising hands twisted with arthritis, showing the blue veins just under the grey skin, he pushed his cowl back to show a face that looked every inch of his two thousand years. Shoulders hunched with age, his true height was hidden, although he did have to look up slightly as he narrowed his eyes at his young apprentice.

“Must she spend more days in agony because you refuse to heed my wishes?” Caius growled, his voice gravelly as if it had been used too much. “Have you learned nothing? Do you not care for her well being?”

Aden bristled at the last comment knowing that after those torturous hours of watching Kara writhe in pain, Caius knew exactly how he felt about her. “My lord,” Aden bowed before walking towards him. “I only asked how she faired. Nothing more. You know I would not risk her health any further.”

Caius looked from his most trusted servant to the girl on her hands and knees doing her best not to scream because she knew he would enjoy her pain. Frowning, he knew under normal circumstances he could trust Aden to do anything he asked of him. Yet when it came to this girl Aden refused one simple request.

The part of his brain that he had kept under lock and key from the moment he ordered Aden to retrieve Kara whispered, What did you expect? That they would bow down and grant you your every wish? You have taken everything from them. Their family, their freedom, their will. All they have is each other. Besides, no matter how powerful you may think you are, you cannot take what they cannot give.

Scowling at the unwanted reminder of that little known fact, Caius mentally put a muzzle on his prisoner. I do not need advice from weak love sick fools. I will have what I came for, prophecy be damned!

With a flick of Caius’s hand towards Kara, her pain subsided and she was able to breathe again. As much as he enjoyed seeing her suffer, there was no time for small pleasures. Noting how Aden made it a point not to look at Kara, or go to her side to help, Caius watched as Kara slowly climbed to her feet using the wall for support. Although Caius could tell it cost Aden a great deal to stay where he was.

No matter, Caius thought to himself. After tomorrow she will not even care if he is in the room.

The muffled humph in the back of his mind that spoke of a naivety Caius had lost long ago did nothing to cool his irritation. Well two could play that game.

“I have a job for you, my friend,” Caius announced in his gravelly voice as he walked over to where Kara stood, reaching out to gently stroke her hair. Inside his head, his prisoner slammed himself against the bars of his cage, desperately trying to escape so he could stop Caius from touching her. A few steps away, he could feel Aden’s desperate need to yank her away from him. Caius was impressed with the amount of willpower it took for Aden to stay his hand. Two men who were desperate to protect one small woman from her destiny. Fools. “I want you to go down to the planet and retrieve the package.”

“I thought the original plan was to bring Kara to him so we would know for sure he is the one we seek,” Aden frowned. Watching his master study Kara as if she was some prize possession, a pet, threaten to tear down the fragile walls he had built around his rage. Attacking the emperor would do neither of them any good. Looking away, he forcefully shoved the unhelpful emotion back into its box. Closing his eyes, fisting his hands in frustration, Aden realized that was exactly what Kara was to Caius. A prize possession, and soon he would have the matched pair. That thought had Aden gritting his teeth again. Kara was his.

“It was,” the emperor answered. “However, I have recently learned he is not as well trained as our young pet here. I will not risk losing all I have worked so hard for because of someone else’s incompetence.” He turned to Aden, who was now looking at Caius with neutral eyes. “You will go down and inform the queen since she could not break him then she leaves me no choice but to do it myself. Something that displeases me greatly.”

“And if she gives me trouble?” Aden asked.

“Dispose of her,” Caius ordered coldly.

“As you wish,” Aden bowed. With one last worried glance towards Kara, that unfortunately the emperor did not miss, Aden left the room.

Caius looked at the door pondering what he should do about Aden’s refusal to heed his wishes concerning his pet. It didn’t matter their connection would be severed this time tomorrow. What concerned him was it had occurred in the first place. Kara should not have been able to bond with anyone aside from the one who would father her children and one of two who had been connected to her through the prophecy for more lives than he cared to count. It was the way it had been since the beginning of time. What was different this time? The scrolls he had in his possession yielded nothing he did not already know, which frustrated him to no end. His gaze went to Kara who stood quietly staring out the window, doing her best not to be noticed. Maybe there was something new in the ones he had discovered just before he brought Kara home.

Home. This metal city was far away from her home or even his. It was a means to and end, and once they finished with this next step of his plan then, maybe, they could think about going home. Before that could happen, there was the small matter of the continuing disobedience he needed to attend to.

“How much more must you suffer before you heed my wishes?” Caius’s voice hissed through the room as he turned and walked towards his throne.

“You ask the impossible,” Kara answered not taking her eyes off the planet. There was something down there. Something familiar, but for the life of her she could not remember ever being here.

“I only ask for what is mine!” Caius bellowed, slapping his hand to his chest in emphasis.

Jumping at the sudden sharp anger, Kara’s eyes snapped to Caius. He had reached the three stairs to the dais where his throne sat. She had no real excuse for what she said next. Maybe it was the fact she was exhausted, or that she could feel Aden as he moved further away from the ship, like taffy being pulled thinner and thinner, threatening to snap in half. Or maybe it was whatever was drawing her attention down to the planet. Pick one. None of them explained her sudden stupidity.

“What is yours? What you ask for has never been yours because it belongs to Aden therefore I cannot give it to you,” she snapped in frustration.

Caius froze as he placed his foot on the last step. The stillness in the room, for there were the ever present elite guard watching over their emperor, was deafening. Wide eyes regarded Kara as if she had lost her mind, and maybe she had.

It was when the emperor began to move that the room began to breathe again. Eyes filled with horror, Kara watched him slowly turn and carefully place himself on the large black throne, making sure that his robes were just so. That the long sleeves hung just right as he gently placed his hands on the arms of the throne. He was moving with that controlled carefulness that spoke of a fine burning rage. One that would consume everyone in its path with white hot flame. When he finally spoke, his voice was the calm before the storm. A deceptive controlled emptiness that with one breath would break, destroying everything in its path.

“Maybe I have been too lenient with you. Maybe I should take a page from your past, from before I found you and you begged me to save you from the bastards that abused you. Maybe I should and give you to one of my garrisons for a few hours. Remind Aden how the touch of a man, any man, fills you with hunger and lust. Then maybe he will see you for the worthless whore you are and sever your bond as I have commanded!” his voice growing louder as his anger grew.

Kara shuddered at the thought of being raped repeatedly. Because that was what he was suggesting. It had been Colin’s favorite form of punishment. Watching as his men used her. Knowing if she did not perform to his satisfaction he would turn her over to them again the next night bound and gagged, leaving her to the mercy of the men. Knowing that once her appetites were appeased that the horror of what she had just done would eat away at her soul.

“No,” she breathed. Taking a step towards him, Kara pleaded. “Please, my lord. I beg of you. Don’t do this! We cannot give you what you want.”

“It’s the ‘we’ in that sentence that displeases me,” Caius snarled slowly rising off his throne, his eyes narrowed on Kara with rage. “There should be no we!” He began descending the steps of the dais, one after one, his voice raising as his rage did. “There should only be Aden and then you. You do not belong to him. You belong to ME!” yelling the last word to emphasize it.

“Please,” Kara whispered, her eyes locked on some far point, arms stiff at her sides, her body trembling as Caius stopped close enough to her his robes brushed her cloak.

The small voice locked away in the back of Caius’s mind broke the gag Caius had put on him and screamed his outrage. He could not do this to Kara. She was precious, she was all he had. Everything that he had done, every sacrifice, every foul act was for her, for all of them. If the bastard that stood glaring at the trembling woman forced this vile act on her it would be the one thing that would break the strong vibrant woman he loved.

Ignoring that small voice, Caius leaned down, his lips close to Kara’s ear and hissed, “Break the bond, or so help me gods I will carry out my threat.”

The movement of her head was so slight Caius barely saw it, but it was enough. She would not, or could not, obey him.

“Very well,” his voice sounding as dead as his heart was. Louder, “Captain Hiram!”

Kara jumped at the sudden loudness, her eyes snapping to the emperor, wide with terror and disbelief. Hiram had been Newell’s second in command. He had worshiped Newell, followed him blindly. Hated Aden and Kara as much if not more than Newell did. The chance to avenge his mentor’s death was a dream he thought would never come true. And now the emperor was handing her to him to do with as he wished. Hiram stopped in front of them, his red robes swishing around his ankles as he saluted his emperor and gave him a small bow.

“My emperor,” he replied sharply.

“Take her to the Red Guard’s garrison,” Caius ordered as he very slowly pulled Kara’s cloak from her shoulders uncovering her to the men’s stares, his eyes locked with hers the entire time. Draping it over his arm, he took one step back and turned to his captain. “There should be on a few who are off duty. Take care not to tear her clothing. She will need the dress when Aden returns with his package. As for her body,” he hesitated, watching the hope in Kara’s eyes spark to life as she thought maybe there would be limitations to what they could do to her. “As long as there is no permanent damage and she is able to heal adequately before tomorrow’s festivities, do with her as you will. You have until this time tomorrow.”

Kara paled.

“You promised,” she whispered. When Caius only stared at her, his expression impassive as if he did not know what she was talking about, she took a step towards him. “When you rescued me from Colin, when you brought me here, you promised you would never force me to endure his form cruelty again.”

There was a flash of compassion in Caius eyes. Just enough that Kara thought maybe the man who had made that promise was still in there, somewhere.

“You can stop this,” he said gently, reaching up to touch her cheek with the tips of his fingers. A feather light touch with eyes full of sorrow. His next words crushed that hope. “All you have to do is break the bond between you and Aden,” he smiled. That smile did not reach his eyes. Those had bled red and held a malice that Kara cowered away from.

“I can’t,” she whispered hoarsely.

“Then you leave me no choice,” his smile dimming. “Captain.” With that one word, Caius turned away from Kara and walked towards the dais, dismissing her.

“With pleasure, my lord,” Hiram smiled, the heat in his eyes turning them darker. With lightning speed, he reached out and grabbed Kara around the neck, yanking her to him. “I am going to enjoy teaching you your place, witch,” he sneered. There should be at least four men in the garrison at that moment. Four to one sounded like one hell of a party.

Broken Promises – Chapter 5

Chapter 5

What day was it? What time? As he pried his eyes opened, Tanis did not have an answer to these questions floating through the pain filled haze that permeated his mind. He did not even know how long he had been unconscious. Minutes, hours, days. What he did know was that once again he was lying on the filthy floor of his cold dark dank cell.

At least the pain has subsided, for the most part, he thought, his body screaming in agony when he tried to move. Panting Tanis decided he did not have the energy to move. Did not have the energy to chase the rats away that scampered over him, or even the energy to wonder for the thousandth time why he was here in the first place.

The queen definitely had not been forthcoming with answers. Instead, she took a great deal of pleasure torturing him. Endlessly. Before this last session she seemed anxious about some piece of news she had just received. Something to do with him. Whatever it was, she had stepped up her attempts to break him. When her own exhaustion finally set in and she ordered him back to his cell, Tanis was not sure he would survive the night. There was nothing left in him to heal himself, and to be honest he did not want to. He had done that once. Once was enough. When she had found out what he had done, she took great pains, mostly his, to make sure he did not attempt to heal himself again.

Every once in a while, when her anger was high and she had been particularly vicious with her torturing, she would force some sort of sleeping draught down his throat so she would be sure his magic would heal him while he slept, like it had since the day he had been born. How she had known this piece of information was lost on Tanis. It was something only his parents and his wife knew about him. If the villagers knew exactly how powerful he really was, then he would have come to the attention of the queen far sooner than this. Queen Maura was a jealous queen. Anyone she felt was a threat to her reign or would be useful she either killed or forced to serve her.  Maybe that was why he was here. Someone had figured out his secret and told her.

Groaning, every muscle screaming as he carefully rolled over onto his back, Tanis wondered vaguely how his family was fairing without him, or if they even knew he was still alive. Usually when someone was dragged off to the castle they were never heard from again. The thought that his wife and child would be left alone to fend for themselves with no place to call home tore at his soul.

Why. Was. He. Here?!

The Queen’s Guard had come into their small village mid-afternoon looking for The One of the Prophecy. A man of great power, whoever the hell that was. Saying that their mistress had determined he resided in Amulree. Since magic was not uncommon on Krynn, no one knew what the soldiers were talking about, and as far as the villagers knew there was no one of great power who lived in their small village. When they had called out Tanis’s name everyone had stood in shock. Luckily his best friend had retained enough wits to run to Tanis’s office where he was busy healing a broken bone and warn him of the danger. The friend had just taken his wife and two year old daughter out the backdoor into the forest when the guards broke through the front door.

Maybe that was when they figured out his secret, when he stepped out of his house and saw what was waiting for him, something inside of him shifted. As if another consciousness that he did not know existed within him took over. With a wave of his hand he had leveled most of the guard the moment they rushed him. The ones who were still standing took a moment to gawk before they rushed him. Then he had done something that even surprised him. He fought them hand to hand. Being a healer, Tanis had never practiced hand to hand combat. It was against his beliefs. But on that day he fought as if he had years of practice. It was disorienting while at the same time familiar. It wasn’t until someone had managed to come up behind and hit him in the back of the head that they were finally able to subdue him. It left Tanis barely conscious, bound and gagged on the ground outside his house while the guards took great pleasure in burning it to the ground. Then everything faded into darkness.

The next thing he remembered was being woken by a bucket of cold water thrown onto his half naked body as he hung in chains from the ceiling by his wrists. When he focused on the queen who stood before him, his fear grew tenfold. She told him of a thousand year old prophecy that depicted two powerful beings separated by time and space, each living their lives not knowing who they truly were. Once brought together, everything would become clear and their powers would rival that of the gods. She informed him he was one half of that pair, and once he gazed into the eyes of the other he would be lost to her forever.

Tanis had tried to tell the queen that she had the wrong person, that the magic he wielded was nothing compared to what she had described. He was a small town healer, not some prophesied demi-god.

The queen had asked if he was as he said, a small town healer of no consequence, then how had he knocked six men unconscious with a wave of his hand? How had he fought like a warrior as if he had spent his life training as one? Tanis did not have answers to her questions. That whole episode seemed like someone else’s memory, not his.

The queen had not allowed him time to think about it any further because she had brought out a strange device made of a shiny black metal and started to explain what it did.  It was about twelve inches long, thick on one end so it fit comfortably in the queen’s small hand, narrowing at the tip like a wand certain witches in their world used to wield magic. He had never seen anything so beautiful, nor had he been so afraid. When the tip of the metal wand touched his skin, it felt as if every muscle tore into a thousand pieces at once. When she took the wand off and the screaming stopped, he realized that he was still in one piece. That his muscles in his fingers, his legs, his neck had not shredded. That he could still move. With a delighted giggle, the queen began to…experiment with the wand. First it was with range, finding she could shrink the area of pain down to a pinprick before slowly radiating it out until it encompassed his body then back again. Then there was intensity. From a small hum that grew into that muscle tearing searing, not stopping  until one of his bones broke from the tension.

Drifting in and out of consciousness, he was not sure how long she had tortured him that first night, throwing more water on him when he passed out from the unbearable pain. When she grew tired of the game, she left him hanging, barely conscious, only to come back far too soon for Tanis’s sanity to start the cycle all over.

He wasn’t sure how long he had hung in that accursed room before her guards had thrown him into this dark rancid cell. When he finally fell into a fitful sleep, it had only seemed like he had just closed his eyes before the door opened again, streaming light onto his face. Two guards hauled him off the floor and dragged him out of the cell, laughing at him as he cried out in pain, so the nightmare could begin again, and again, and again.

Blinking up at the dark ceiling, he tried to breathe through the pain, to relax so he could assess the latest damage the queen had done to him. Tanis was sure a couple of ribs had been re-broken and maybe a couple of the bones in his feet. Not as many as last time. Tanis did not know whether he should be grateful or worried that she had gone easy on him. The moment he thought that he began to laugh, which turned into a cough that left him groaning in pain.

As his body finally settled down to something more manageable, a sudden sharp pain sliced through his head. A voice that sounded far away cried for help. Holding his head between his hands, Tanis grimaced. This was not the first time in the last hours he had felt something…someone pushing against his mind. Even though he had never felt anything like it before, the presence felt somehow familiar. It had been curious before. As if it was not sure if what it felt was real, like he felt. This time the presence was in distress. There was a part of Tanis, that part that he did not recognize, that desperately wanted to find that presence and save whoever it was. It was overwhelming. So much so that he was starting to rise off the floor, the pain forgotten when the when the door banged open again. Blinking against the sudden light, the confusion of what was and what was going on in his head left him unable to fight as someone grabbed an arm and dragged him into the light.

“You’re to be cleaned up for some special guest Queen Maura is expecting,” the guard Tanis had learned was named Tenan announced in his gravelly voice as he and his flunky dumped Tanis into a tub of cool water. Tenan’s voice was due to an injure that left a nasty scar across his neck. It looked like the thirty something warrior had his head almost decapitated, but with the help of a healer, the only tell-tale signs were the scar and his voice. The injury was enough to grant him the privilege of becoming one of the dungeon guards. Something he was not too happy about. That sour mood translated in the treatment Tanis received whenever the man had drag him from his cell to the throne room.

The second guard was very young. Tanis thought he had heard someone call him Reyal, but he was barely conscious at the time so could not be sure. Barely twenty, if Tanis’s assessment of the boy was correct, being a new soldier, Reyal won the luckily detail of being down in the bowls of the castle until he proved himself. Like Tenan, he was unhappy about his lot in life.

Eyes lowered, two barely clad slave women stepped next to the tub and began to remove what was left of his pants. Quickly and methodically they scrubbed his body and hair clean, being extra sure to clean any open wounds. When they were done, Tanis felt even more battered and bruised, even though they had been as careful as they could. At the nod of one of the women, the guards hauled Tanis out of the tub setting him down on the cold stone floor. The guards continued their conversation, ignoring them as the women dried and dressed Tanis.

“I don’t see what the big deal is,” Tenan sneered. “The only power I’ve seen this lowlander do is basic healing. You should have heard the queen when she found out he had been healing his own wounds.” His laughter filled the room, grating on Tanis’s nerves and making the women cringe in fear. “She almost killed him then forced him to heal himself so she could do it all over again. I’ve never seen her so angry.”

“I don’t understand the interest in this one either. Healers are a dinar a dozen, and from what I’ve heard he’s not anything special,” Reyal scoffed from where he sat with his arms crossed, tipping the chair onto its back legs.  “Have you heard of him doing anything else?”

Tenan regarded Tanis. The women were combing out the snarls in his shoulder length brown hair. Tanis did not dare look up to meet the guard’s eyes, knowing it could earn him a kick in his already sore ribs.

“There was something when they went to get him. I guess he leveled a half a dozen guards with just a wave of his hand. Then he fought the rest with moves I had never heard of.” Tenan walked over to the group huddled on the floor, shoving one of the women away so he could grab Tanis by the hair, yanking his head back, sneering at the defeat in his dark blue eyes. “Rendering three more useless until someone managed to knock him out. Now he won’t even heal his own wounds without queen Maura’s permission.” With a shove, he pushed Tanis face first into the ground.

“Doesn’t sound like someone who can defeat our best warriors,” Reyal sneered. “Maybe that’s why he allowed his family to burn with his home. To scared to fight for their lives, only concerned with his sorry hide. Selfish bastard.”

“After today it won’t matter,” Tenan said, stepping towards one of the women who sat trying to be invisible. “He’ll be out of our hair and someone else’s problem.”

Someone else’s problem? A scream broke through Tanis’s puzzlement. Looking up he saw Tenan had grabbed one of the women by the hair and was dragging her over to the only table in the room. Reyal was chuckling that masculine chuckle when they are thinking sinful thoughts as he watched the woman struggle, a gleam in his eyes that said he was more than willing to join Tenan in his fun.

When Tenan slammed the woman’s upper body onto the table hard enough to stun her, leaving her legs over the edge, and ripped what little cloth covered her body, something in Tanis broke. That other foreign consciousness that Tanis now realized had resided in the back of his mind for as long as he could remember boiled to the surface. Along with it came an emotion his gentle heart had never felt before. Hate. Hate because he was tired of the pain, tired of the abuse from people he had done nothing to. Hate because he did not know if his family was alive or dead and their lives were worth much more than his. Hate because there was nothing left in him to feel anything else.

Suddenly he knew that if he could heal, then he could kill. It wouldn’t take much. A bit of concentration and he could mend a broken bone or steady an uneven heartbeat. It would stand to reason it would only take a thought to stop a heart from beating, or lungs from breathing. One thought, one flick of his finger and the bastard that had tormented him and these women would be on the floor dead, but Tanis did not want it to be that easy. He wanted the guard to suffer as much as they had. As Tenan began to work the ties on his pants, Tanis struggled to his knees, leveling his gaze at the unsuspecting man.

Suddenly Tenan clutched his neck, his pants falling to his ankles as he struggled to breathe. It took a moment for Reyal to realize something was wrong, then another to realize who it was that was slowly killing his comrade.

With a yell, Reyal jumped to his feet, closing the distance between him and Tanis in two strides, the woman beside him scrambling out of the way. With a vicious backhand, he knocked Tanis onto his back, breaking the eye contact. Tenan dropped to his knees gasping for air.

“Are you all right?” Reyal asked kneeling down next to Tenan. All Tenan could do was nod his head. “I’ll kill him!” Reyal hissed, grabbing the hilt of his sword as he made to stand. Tenan grabbed his arm stopping him.

“No,” he ordered hoarsely. He swallowed hard a few more times before going on. “The queen said not to harm him. Whoever is coming wants him in one piece or the alliance will be broken. She dare not anger this person or he will destroy our world.”

“Is he that powerful?” Reyal asked, eyes wide, his voice barely above a whisper. Everyone knew Queen Maura was the most powerful sorceress on their world. To know there was someone even more powerful, even more dangerous, was frightening.

“Yes,” Tenan answered as his friend helped him to his feet, pulling his pants up as he went. “Now help me drag him up to the throne room. Whoever is coming is supposed to arrive any minute.”

They walked over to where a dazed Tanis lay. Each grabbed an arm, pulling him to his feet. The world spun around him, leaving him unsure which side was up. Tanis had not missed a single word of their conversation. Evidently his predicament was about to become worse, if that was possible. What he wasn’t sure of was what frighten him more. This new threat he was about the face, or the fact using his magic for something he considered evil had felt good. So very good.
